Going to Salt Lake City

Anyone have any ideas as to what is fun to do there? I've never been to SLC and never even thought that I'd be going, but I will be there for about 6 weeks at the end of August.

Fun stuff, drinking, gambling..anything?

No gambling, there is a Hooter's on State Street. I've never been to the Aquarium, so I don't know if it's any fun. I know there's an arcade somewhere. Cabela's is in Lehi, just out of Salt Lake. A couple LFS. Lagoon water park isn't too far away.
So what do you consider fun?

Wendover is a couple hours away, you can gamble there.

The ski resorts are nice to visit. I really like them without all the snow.

And if you smoke, it really sucks!

Actually the mountains are beautiful, we drive up into the Uintas all the time. How much free time will you have there?

I love anything...snowboarding, running, hiking, biking, climbing and swimming for sports. I love video games (ADD is greeeaaat) can't stand 1 thing going on at a time. I have to have like 6 millon things all at once. Bars are fun to just meet interesting people, and hang out.

I LOVE to eat....(that's the reason for all the running, etc) and I love my saltwater fish. They live better than me. I like girls too, but they don't seem to like the ultra-nerd that is me oh, well they are missing out.

That should be enough for someone to point me in the right direction I hope

You don't need to go all the way into Park City! That's their new location. You can still find the original Red Rock in Salt Lake City at 200 S and 200 W.

If you can eat at only one place while you're there, make it the Red Rock!

YAY!! stuff to do and things to eat!! Now, is it true that you can't buy regular beer in the supermarket? I looked at the laws of the state and if I read it right, you can only buy 3.2% beer there?

I am going to be there for 6 weeks and will have free time after 5 everyday, until I decide I get tired and want to go back to the hotel..

You buy liquor at the liquor store, few and far in between. Closed on Sundays. Beer is all 3.2 and you get it in the grocery stores, or 7-11 type stores. I think wine coolers are 3.2 also. Not sure if there is stronger beer in liquor stores or not. I haven't been in one for many years. I know we (Evanston) have a steady stream of Utah drivers that come here for fireworks, booze, cigarettes, and porn. LOL It's loosened up since I was a kid. Hee hee.

There's plenty to do.

Golf: tons of courses and cheap. 35-40 for 18 holes with a cart. Can find twilight rates even cheaper.

Biking and hiking: miles of trails , beginner to advanced, within a few miles of town.

Club scene: not into it but there are plenty. The better ones are private meaning you have to have a membership. Those are available cheaply for out of towners or you can just get someone walking in to "sponsor you" for nothing.

Dining: plenty of good eats for all price ranges. Mention what you like and I'll toss out some ideas.

Drinking: Available at clubs and most restaurants. 3.2 beer and coolers available in just about every grocery story and convenience store. Hard liquors, wines and real beer available at the state owned liquor outlets. Beware that most of them close at 7pm but a few are open until 10pm And, as Debi said, liquor stores are closed on Sundays, holidays, and election day. There's a number of microbreweries so try the local tastes. Unfortunately, they are 3.2 as well unless they have it distributed in the private clubs and it may still be 3.2

Gambling: Utah is one of two states with no form of gambling unless you consider driving a gamble. Drivers tend to be aggressive. Nevada is 2 hours due west and you can find whatever game you like 24x7 at Wendover. Locals call it Bendover.

If you have a couple of days, there are more national parks in Utah than any other state. Arches, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Canyonlands. Some landscape like nowhere else.

Religion: no comment but if you give you name and address to anyone, expect the missionarys to visit.

Weather: perfect this time of year. Warm days, cool nights and little rain. Very little humidity.

Have fun.
