Iodine...HOw much is enough?
How do you calculate the correct amount of Iodine needed for your system. Also how often do you dose? I add now, but am unsure if I am adding the correct amount needed.

Iodine in reef aquaria part I
Iodine in reef aquaria part II I would not (and don't) dose it to my tank. But I strongly suggest you go through the article I posted.

do you have an Iodine test kit?
if your going to dose Iodine it may be good to get one and follow the parameters. |

I do not believe that dosing iodine is necessary or beneficial for most reef aquaria.

Randy, I'm sure you read that in the links I provided.

Yes, I gave them a quick look.

Ahhh! So the presence of iodine in the structure does not necessarily correlate to required presence in the water column! Interesting read indeed!
I started dosing very small amounts and percieved no positive changes after listening to a reccomandation fo a fellow reefer. I did so in order to make a more suitable environment for Colt and xenia. So, because I do frequent water changes, dosing iodine is most likely a waste of my time and $$$? As in many other situations in life, I find that misinformation with regard to making a sale is all too common eh? Thx for linking the articles!

I was dosing and testing iodine levels in my tank for several months. Iodine was recommended as beneficial to my shrooms and polyps. I spent $$$ on iodine supplement and test kits not to mention the time. My shrooms looked good.I was adding 8-10ml of iodine daily just to keep the levels at .06. The next day the test would read barely a trace of iodine.
I read the articles about effects iodine may or maynot have and decided that I would try not dosing and perform regular water changes instead. It has been 3 months since I stopped using iodine. My shrooms, polyps and everybody look fantastic. Great color, large polyps and new growth. I am convinced that the iodine in supplemental form is a waste of valuable time and money. I use Tropic marin salt and do a 5-10% water change every 7-10 days. |

Iodine boosts macroalgae and some kind of corals. At least the type of iodine I use to dose.
Every week I dose about one cubic centimetre of a solution prepared with KI (potasium iodine) and pure fresh water. My SPS and LPS do very well and my fish have never gone ill (I purchased a premmas biaculeatus that came out to have oodinum, but after a week he got better). I recommend you dose iodine (but not the one that is sold by your lfs, which is really expensive). Good luck |

I dose Iodine religiously over the last 3 months with dosage according to the instruction on the bottle. I didn't not do any test measurement.
The strange thing is that, I thought my zoo and mushroom would multiply like crazy, but the true is that they did't. They are healthy, but not multiplying much. However, the strange thing is my RBTA. It started as a small palm size, and now a day, when fully expanded can almost reach the size of a tyre. Lucky I have a tank that is big enough for it. But it is still disturbing its distance neighbor. Is that due to the iodine? |

Some species use a lot more iodine than others, but I tested that hypothesis fairly carefully for Caulerpa racemosa and Chaetomorpha and didn't see a statistically different response with and without dosing. I show that study in this article: Iodine in Reef Tanks 2: Effects on Macroalgae Growth http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...l2003/chem.htm from it: What type of macroalgae did you see a response in? What form of iodine?

Thanks! for the info....it just seems that there are so many additives...I just want to make sure:
1. I am adding what is nessasary. 2. How much is needed. 3. When it is needed I seem to be collecting bottles, boxes, and canisters of things at an alarming rate..lol |

Hi NemO,
It is very easy and cheap, just do the following: Mix 1 gr of KI (you can get it at any chemists store) per litre of pure H2O. Every two weeks pour 10 ml of this solution per 100 litres of acuarium water. I've been doing this for about half a year and it works. Greetings from Madrid. |

Randy,
Thanks for the info. Premmas, Sorry what is KI? Do you have the full name? Thanks. |

KI is Potassium iodide (K and I are the chemical symbols for potassium and iodine respectively).

Randy,
Thanks for the info. Premmas, Sorry what is KI? Do you have the full name? Thanks. That is the same material that ESV sells. I''m not sure that most Pharmacies in the US sell KI. They do sometimes sell Lugol's, which is a mixture of I2 and KI.

That's it: Potassium Iodide, KI or IK is ok as well.

I have been using one drop of Lugols a week in my 100 gallon reef for about ten or 12 years now only because I have a large bottle of the stuff. It was about $25.00. It will last me for the rest of my life. Does it do anything for the corals? I doubt it, but I guess it has not hurt.
Good luck. Paul |

I watched a video that made a claim that there may be link between the toxicity of nitrate and level of iodine in your tank. They were clear to say this has not been researched thoroughly enough.
Does this make sense?
