mysterious flat tire....
so I've been brooding about this the last few days... I mentioned it to a friend and they filled in some blanks. I want someone to reassure me that my friend is wrong.
Went and got into my car the other day.... (radio on windows rolled up) Backed out of my driveway - everythings fine - got on the road within about 100 yards my tire was flat - FLAT. not low - FLAT. I pulled over - put the donut on - went to my companies Tire and Repair Shop and they fixed it. here's the thing thats weird. The puncture was on the sidewall of the front drivers side tire ( I would have noticed it being really low or flat when I got into the car) It was a slit - Much like a pocket knife or similar object would produce. when I explained this to a friend - he was sure that it wasnt an "accident" - he says that you can take a knife to a tire and it may lose SOME air but wont really go flat till you move the car. My Question is - does this sound consistant with someone possibly taking a knife to my tire during the night and once I drove it first thing in the morning It went flat within about 100yrds. the nice thing is - if someone did do it to my car - they didnt really bother me too much. I had to put a donut on it - but once I got to the repair shop - I had my scheduled maintnance I'd been putting off performed - brakes checked, emmission system check, fuel system check, struts checked(that was extra as I wanted them checked) oil change etc... plus the tire replaced.... free of charge. |

I have seen many tires that are "slashed" They go flat as soon as they are cut.

you're jumping to conclusions. your tire was not slashed. trust me, i was the "tire guy" at a small full service gas station for almost two years. i once pulled a tablespoon out of a tire, and the spoon part was the part that puntured the tire! tires loose air immediately when slashed or cut.

If the tire shop was able to repair the tire it wasn't slashed, or stabbed.

Your probably a bad driver just like my wife, she parks against curbs, drives over everything, she managed to ruin 2 sets of new tires in 3 weeks.

Speaking from first hand observation I can assure you that slashing the sidewall with a knife will release the air from the tire.

well good, Thats what I wanted to hear. I wasnt too worried about it till I mentioened it to a friend and he was certain - which made me think about it.
No its not my "friend" she lives an hour away and is my Husbands sister. She might be rude but she certainly isnt a vandal. I take the bad driver comment personal - I am a very safe driver - and I know how to handle my vehicle - this is a bad road and has alot of deep pot holes etc... could have happened to anyone. thanks for the feedback |

Not that this may apply to this, but my Hubby has blown out a tire or two, on his trucks trailer from hitting a curb... Soo I wouldn't see why hitting numerous potholes wouldn't have the same type of effect on a car tire??? Ya think???
