Should I buy a HD-DVD player?

I was just at wal-mart looking around and it appears they have marked the RCA HDV5000 down from $500 to $280. I really want one, but don't know if I should just wait for the Blu-ray HD-DVD war to end and one to reign supreme.

Tell me what you think.

My wife wont answer my phones, calls or emails. I think she knows I want to spend money. Think she will get mad if I just buy it?

I would say no, I think Blu-ray is going to be the winner. There are already more movies coming out on Blu-ray than HD-DVD. At the stores, I see Blu-ray movies all around, hardly anybody has HD-DVD's...

Ahh that old trick, I don't think she will fall for it. I tried to tell her the big screen was for her.

I actually think HD-DVD will win. BD can't get there dual layers to work, there players are over $1,000 right now, the drives they just released for comps don't play movies. I think right now more people will fall for the hd-dvd as it is cheaper, and it works far better right now.

Think of it like beta vs vhs. beta was better, but people were used to vhs.

And make sure you also pick up several of her favorite movies so she can really appreciate it.

I say wait until war is decided. I think Blu-ray will win because Adult movies make up majority of DVD sales and they back Blu-Ray. What will probably happen is something totally new will replace both before either one becomes dominant( Maybe cheap large size Flash memory). If you buy either make sure your HDTV has HDMI inputs otherwise DRM software on disc may downconvert you signal. (Movie Studios swear and promise they won't, but you cant trust them )

I would definitely wait for the market to decide and Tdog has a very good point. Especially about a new technology all of a sudden popping up and blowing them both away.

I agree with those who say WAIT.

And I agree that a third technology will emerge to beat both.

I don't see HD-DVD or Blu-ray being long-term winners.

I would not buy either one until the wars end. I like Blu-ray technology better, but it make me very nervous that it was started by SONY. Let's see, can we count the flops that SONY has backed...... ??????

The other thing that would stop me now, I haven't seen that many movies in HD that are spectacular. A high end dvd player now, especially one that will upscale looks awful darn good.

Whatever technology wins better be backward compatible and play music discs of all formats. I am not about to replace dvds again.
VHS, laser disc, dvd, HD dvd....... No thanks.

why bother? With on-demand HD and a DVR...

That's the technology that will beat the disc. When the cable companies get everyone enough bandwidth, actual physical discs will become a thing of the past. A virtual videostore online..

I have tivo, but not a hi-def tivo. I am thinking about just building a nice HTPC, then when the drives for PC's come out I can just add them. Plus I can then record stuff, and download stuff.

I agree. I've stopped buying DVDs because of Netflix--in fact, because of it every DVD I ever paid for was a waste of money!

Internet movie subscriptions are starting to appear already but the technology is premature. In 5 or 10 years though this is how we will watch our movies, in high-def or 3D or whatever is on the cutting edge then.

I would wait, because in my words i would say they are in the beta stages, i would wait for a while to see what happens, because there is hd-dvd and blueray, sony has theirs, and toshiba has theirs, id also wait for the price to go down.
