6.4 dKH or 6.4 meq/L?
Assuming it is 6.4 dKH, baking soda or a commercial buffers are a fine solution for now, but eventually you'll want to use a balanced calcium and alkalinity system, IMO. This calculator shows how much to dose: Reef chemicals calculator http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chem_calc3.html and these articles should help: Solving Calcium and Alkalinity Problems http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm The “How To” Guide to Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners, Part 2: What Chemicals Must be Supplemented http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-04/rhf/index.php How to Select a Calcium and Alkalinity Supplementation Scheme http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/feb2003/chem.htm

Use the calculator above to see how much to dose. It is the same as baking soda or sodium bicarbonate

How is the ph high with a low alk? Dosing for alk will only raise the ph, right?

High pH (above 8.5 or so) when not using limewater is often simply testing error, but some tanks with poor aeration and lots of photosynthesis may get that high during the day. Mine does, but I use limewater.
Dosing baking soda to boost alkalinity can actually lower pH a tiny bit, at least until the tank blows off the extra CO2.
