Hello jdieck,
I did not add 150ml WM cal as you said, because I want to see what happend to day. so ysterday, reading after added 80ml
8 Pm yesterday cal=360, alk=2.17
7 Pm today cal= 350, alk=2.23 added 80ml
8Pm today cal= 365, alk=2.34 add another 70ml at 9Pm.
10Pm today cal= 370, alk=2.23

These numbers turn me crazy!!! Am I doing something wrong. or my test kit was making errors. Haven't got change to buy Magnestium test kit and baking soda yet. Vincent.

Increase Calcium from 350 ppm (7pm) to 370 ppm (10pm) you just needed about 65 ml of supplement but you added a total of 150 ml which may suggest that your magnesium is low and calcium is precipitating.
Get the kit and the soda to start balancing it all. While you are at it you will need some Magnesium Only Supplement. Get some Kent Tech-M or similar even if you do not need it now you will need it later.

I will be traveling the whole week and I do not know if I can connect but I will try, meanwhile Billybeau or Boomer can help.

Like jd said, lets get that mag up and go from there. I've used Kent Tech-M. Fine product.

Hello Everyone. Things are looking better.

Had the PH at 9.0 yesterday. Measured it today after 24 hours and it is still 8.5. Just added enough baking soda to raise it to 10 (2.3 tsps). Guess I underestimated it a little as the alk was 9.8 after 15 minutes with no drop in Ph and no signs of precipitation.

I think the recipe 2 was the key. I'll check again tomorrow and hope the alk is aroun 9.3 before adding and then boost it to 10. If it hold for two days only dropping .5, I'll start dosing the 2 part again of recipe 2 the proper amount to raise it from 9.5 to 10.

Thanks and enjoy PR.

Hello everyone,
I checked Magnestium at LFS, it is 1320??? Mixed 3ts Baking soda with 2-3 cups water, let it drip in the sum stopped about 1/2 , took the reading.
pH=8.8 ( I think it between 8.3 to 8.4,but my kid and my wife said it 8.8!)
alk=6.7 dKH increase from 6.23 yesterday.
I did not add anything else. At what pH level is considered danger? Thanks... vincent

Hello, here is the reading in the morning (6 hours later, plus light off for the same time)
cal=325. alk=7.68dKH, pH=8.00(for sure).
Thanks, vincent.

Alright. Dont worry about dripping it. You need about 4 1/2 tsp to get up to 9.0

As long as you didnt bake the baking soda it wont impact pH much.

I would mix 1 tsp in a couple cups of water and add it in the sump. Do this every 12 hrs or so and test before you add the next dose. In 3 days you should be up to 9 dkh. (we hope).

You could go a little faster (say 1 1/2 tsp) if you want just keep testing as you go.

And since you are at 8.0, you could bake the baking soda which will raise your pH a point or two. Just spread it out on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 for an hour or so.

I used the baked baking soda which gives me the added benefit of raising my pH a couple of points when I dose. It usually falls back down within 24 hrs.

In the past I've bumped my alk by a couple dKh at a time and have never had a problem but I have a large sump to get some good dilution before hitting the display.

Well it fell a little more than I anticipated. It was at 9.8 and fell to 8.8 in 24 hours. I'm going to bump it back up to 10 and see what happens tomorrow.

Thanks everyone,
For ph I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Test Kit, cal and alk is Salifert. AP - pH kit seems hard to read.
1- I will dose the baking soda as suggested.
2- Can I dump at once, slowly?
3- Can I do the Warner Marine Cal the same time?

I've been pouring it in all at once slowly in front of a SEIO powerhead even the though the calculator says not to. I'm adding to a 90 gallon. I have a PH probe and it does not show the PH being affected.

Wow, two for the price of one,

Lets see.

Vincent - I would raise your alk over a couple days. Calcium you can add pretty much all at once though I would split the dose over a couple of days. just wait a little while between the cal and alk for everything to dissolve. Maybe 20 min or so.

Tang, OK, just keep taking notes over the next few days. I like 9 dkh myself. Then we'll see what actual tank consumption is.

OK, quick report, I am late of work.
pH= 8.2 (light on). Added 40ml WM reefpure. Added 1/2 tsp baked baking soda(bbs).
7 AM. light off. pH= 8.3, cal=350, alk=8.3dkH. Added 1/2 tsp of bbs.
8AM, pH= 8.4, alk=9.92 ( how long should I wait to take the reading).
Thanks, vincent

Vincent, you are using an awful lot of reefpure. You need to get your calcium up about 70 ppm. I would save the reefpure for when you are at 420 or so and pick up some Turbo Calcium or Reef Complete. These products are much more concentrated and you will need much less to get where you want to be. Use the calculator we showed you and you'll see what I mean.

The 40 ml you put in isnt getting you there. You would need a little over 200 ml to get above 400.

Once you get your calcium up then you can use the reefpure to keep it there.

I'd go with the Turbo Calcium. The 2-parts are less concentrated.

Alk is fine for now but you will have to watch it when you raise your calcium. I'll probably fall a little.

Now I'm getting mad. I boosted teh alk back to 10 last night and it is at 8 tonight. I have boosted it back up to 10 but it's not holding. I can dose the two part with that big of a drop. It's just too much to dose. AARRGGHHH!

Dont get mad Tang. Stay with it. Your tank has been low in alk for awhile. Your getting closer. Keep checking and dosing. I think you'll find that in the next week or so it'll slow down. Try to keep it around 9 or 10.

Also while this is going on keep an eye on your calcium.

Well, I guess it's looking better. Today alk was 9.0 when I measured. I went ahead and checked the calc and mag also.

Calc was 410
Mag was 1300

I will continue to boost to 10 and check again tomorrow. I hope I'm getting a drop of 1 over a day because thats 128 ml of Randy's Recipe 2 to boost the alk back to 10.

Hey Tang... Take it easy friend... we do not want you to loose your marbles

Be patient.. (I got to remind myself of this, tomorrow I am taking the plane back and I am not looking forward to security).
In any case my 2 cents... stop pushing it, maintain alk at 9 for a couple of weeks until the system stabilize, it is perfectly OK. Give the ions a chance to level out and complete all their required chemical changes and interactions.
The good news, there has been more learning in a couple of weeks that could have got in months.

Se you guys over the weekend, I'll let you know how it went.
