I think there might be different one that are thicker and heavier than others. I've felt some that were really thick. I found the Gen 6000 with needlewheel for 79.99 here:

http://www.thereefstop.com/catalog/p...roducts_id/306

This guy has great prices and good service on everything. I'd say his name but it might get him in trouble as he's moderator here but I'll sure recommend his site. If he doesn't carry something you want, email him and he'll add to it and beat any price out there too!

areze,
All of the uniseals I've seen are for min 1/8" thick material. Have you ever used them on a thin material & had them seal?

Cheap Collection Cup

This was $6 at HD and works like a champ...

Does that go into a water bottle? That may work but if it goes inside the neck it would lose some efficiency on the smoothness of the tapered neck to outlet of the jug which is why I was thinking a collection cup outside the existing bottle neck. I guess the only way to see is to go up to HD or Lowes with a bottle and play in the plumbing dept. I would like to come up with a air tight collection cup so an air pressure stop could be made for a scrum bucket.

Is there a ridge inside the water bottle necks? I haven't examined one in a few years so I need to go looking. And if there is, is there enough plastic to sand it smooth?

It goes into a 3" to 1.5" pipe reducer fitting.

I'm going to Lowe's today to look for some fittings for some fine pore stones I just got for my cc skimmer and I think I saw water bottles there one time. I think I'll pick one up, hit the plumbing aisle and start experimenting.

Not to make you guys the guinea pigs, but take some pictures if you get something done. I look at that empty 5 gallon bottle everyday thinking about the possibilities. Just want to see what you guys come up with.

I went to Lowes and they didn't have the 5 gallon jugs. They had 3 gallon ones that were made of a thin shiny plastic from absopure. The ones I'm thinking of are the 5 gallon and they almost have a dimpled appearance and are real thick heavy feeling.

I will have to check his out, but I think I saw them at Home Depot the last time I was there. I remember they were about $15-16 dollars.

Heck... Go to your local chain grocery stores, they typically have a water vending machine selling RO filtered water where they also sell 5 gallon water jugs.

If the plastic is too thin for a uniseal you could glue a peice of plastic on the area of the hole. This would make it thicker and stronger.

ok no pictures yet. but i used a 1" - 1/2" threaded reducer. drilled a 1 1/4" hole and wrapped the 1" threads with teflon tape and screwed it into the jug. no tapping needed. it held water and what little pressure i could apply. the 1" - 1/2" reducer allows one to drill out the center for a 45 degree street elbow 1/2" or 3/4 "this will fit through the 1 1/4" hole and will allow for the pump to direct the water into a cyclonic action. i cut the bottom and top off another jug and placed onto the other as a collection cup. it litteraly snapped into place and is next to imposiible to remove without sealent. would certainly need some sealent to prevent simmate from leaking everywhere. this all took only 30 minutes. could be the fatest and easiest skimmer to build. all i need is a pump.

i used 2 polycarbonate 5 gallon water jugs. manufactured by reid plastics.

will post pictures soon.

Get those pics up!!! Also if you have a pic of the wall thickness after you drilled it that would be great. Did you measure the thickness?

I pointed at this thread to kentrob__ because he builds needlewheels and some really nice ones. He said that it would probably be better to go with 3 of these pumps vs the 6000 since they use 1/2" uniseals and those are a lot easier to work with and we wouldn't have to push as hard which may make the bottle dent in. Here's the pumps:

this shows how i cut the first jug

here is how i snapped the cut piece into place with drain on collection cup. also the extra "groove" at top will allow a lid to be placed on collection cup.
