and I'm now wondering if there is any reason why the euro is a better way to go than the beckett? Your thoughts?
Beckett driven skimmers usually require a higher preassure rated pump than the little mag 5 I'm running. I will sooner or later plumb a drain hole...I've just not gottne around to it.

Kellypark,

Dont have a sku..sorry. I just happened by them at Wal-Mart. If you can't find those maybe check out some others that might work.

As far as eficiency goes..Becketts and Aspirated Air skimmers(euro-reef type) do the same job and it all depends on the design. I would say that the Euro-type are more energy efficient..simply because of the smaller pumps used.

Taggin' along as well, but I have 2 questions. First, what size is the barb fitting that you used? 1/2 pipe by xxx barb? I have constructed one of these using a modified aquaclear 402 powerhead and I can't get the venturi to start. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's a 3/8 " hose barb. Did you make the tee with tht squeezed in middle?

Yes, I did exactly as you described, but I used a 1/8" hose barb. I just don't think there's enough air flow through it. I will try again today.

Are you getting any air? Maby you need to squeeze the middle more. The air lines on most venturis are pretty small.

PlaneCrazy,
It might be that the 402 doesn't pull water through at a high enough rate. A mag 5 is rated at a little over 500gph, whats the 402 rated at? If you are stuck using that as a pump you might want to look at this THREAD
He uses a maxijet.

Just made one myself. Tried a 300gph pump and it wouldn't pull air, went to a 600gph and it pulled plenty of air. I noticed the Turboflotor design has a separate water supply and the pump actually takes water from the skimmer and "bubblefies" (new word) it, and returns it to the skimmer. I could plumb a water supply from my drain directly into the skimmer. DO you think this would be better or useless? How would you know what to set the flow rate at? Thanks

wharfrat48,

That might make it a bit more efficient. Kind of like a recirculation type skimmer. BTW hows it working for you? Mine started making foam almost immediatley. I'm pretty impressed so far considering the time and expense to make one.

Have not really tried it yet-- just tested it in freshwater. I'm going to try plumbing with a T off my drian line. If I do it this way there will be alot of air from my standpipe going into the skimmer. This air will be in "BIG" bubble form--do you think this will be a problem? Have you ever seen a Turboflotor in action-- it's supposed to be plumbed from the drain as well.

There was a thread a few months ago where aomeone built a DIY skimmer with PVC and used his overflow as the air/water source and got some foam.

Here's mine:

and another:

This is with an Aquaclear 802 powerhead at 400 gph. It took a little finessing with the venturi, but it works great! Oh, and this is after about 8 hours of operation.

I just added 120 lbs of live rock.....I believe that's where all the extra foam is from.

Great idea. Thanks for sharing! I've been trying to put together a parts list for my trip to Lowes. Anyone who has done this have one available?
Thanks, John

I believe that the first post contains a list of parts. But here's what I used:
2 - 4" Sched 40 PVC Female couplers
1 - 4" to 2" reduction bushing
6" of 2" sched. 40 pvc pipe
1 - 1/2" PVC "T" fitting. Top is 1/2" pipe thread (for venturi)
4 - 1/2" pvc 90 deg. fittings
12" of 1/2" pvc pipe
1 - 1/2" MPT to 1/4" barb adapter
2- 1/2" MPT to PVC adapter (threaded to attach to jug)

1 - Aquaclear 402 powerhead (this is marginal at best! more GPH is better!)

The top of mine is a slip fit. I took one 4" female adapter and glued the 4"-2" reducer PARTWAY in. I left about 1/2" sticking out below the female adapter. That way it slips into the other female adapter for easy emptying. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks! This is my 1st PVC DIY project. Your list is alot easier to carry into Lowes than what I had put togther so far. I would have been hosed! Are you still happy with yours?

I'm still happy with mine.....but I really need a bigger pump. I believe that a mag 5 at 600 gph was used by jimmy for his. Mine works, but I get "puffs" of bubbles as the venturi starts and stops. It still works well. I get dry foam and lots of it.

I found the jugs at our Home Hardware up here in Canada for about $5.49 each. Will have to pick them up and built one too.
Thanks for the great design.

I'm going to check Zellars and walmart too, They both sell Rubbermade and I think are cheaper.
