I would rather not use another pump and add more wattage if I don't have to. I'm going to T off my return line and feed it that way.

Split!!!!!!

Iīve been wanting to respond for a while now but my pc was not working right. Iīve had an older style ASM G-4 skimmer for over 5 years and I hated it I felt that the sedra 5000 didnīt produce enough bubbles in the chamber and it never did skim very well.
I wound up running a Dass bx-1 instead and that little thing was out performing the G-4 and mind you this is on a 180.
Iīve always wanted to mod the G-4 but I have very little room in my sump. I should have gotton another skimmer a long time ago but money has always been an issue for me. After reading this thread and getting the mess thanks to magvi I did the mod on the G-4 and what an improvement it shut down the bx-1 right away. I am wondering if I could add a secound sedra to the skimmer because I have an extra one. I would run it as a feed as well not recric because I donīt have the room for it. I will have to add the secound one with tubing to get it to work.
Kent do you think the body on the G-4 could handle two 5000 well modded?
If yes I would deffenitly go for it.
I just did three layers of mesh with the tie wraps and regular venturi and what a difference in performance thanks to you guys.
I am really gratefull for this mod thanks again. I could never see my self buying a $1000 skimmer for my tank I would if I had the money but that hasnīt been the case. This is defintly agreat mod for poor guys like myself.
Thanks again,
Vic

We are glad that you are happy and satisfied, which are two things that seem to elude some of us in this hobby.

One thing I did diferent was instead of cutting all the pins off I left some on. On the otter edge I left every other one on I thought it would help keep the mesh more stable. I wish I had a meter to tewst it. Maybe later on iīll get one.

Great information guys. I plan on doing an 8" dia 24" tall (reaction chamber) meshwheel. Is there a way to detmine how many LPH I should be shooting for, and what pumps? I plan on using a diffuser. If there is a "set" of standards for these, maybe we could get a post with them all together?

If not, can anyone give a recommendation on pumps (1 genx4100, 2 genx2400s?) and also neck diameter I should use?

Thanks!

Matt

8" x 24" body or total skimmer height? If 24" body Go with a Gen-X 4100 recirculating with mesh and bigger venturi. If 24" total height go with 2400....

Yeah, 24" body. Is 1 4100 better than 2 2400s?

2 2400's will put too much air in that skimmer. Done properly, you'll get about 19LPM out of 1 4100 and that's more than enough for that reaction chamber size. Make sure you build the venturi instead of choking the pump out with the stock Gen-X venturi. Use 1" plumbing for the intake and outlet of the pump as well. 1" thinwall PVC fits perfectly over the outside of the outlet so you can glue it in place with 2part epoxy then use 1" fittings on it...

I noticed an increase of heat product from meshing my Maxijet pump, what do you think?

It's such a small pump that it really doesn't suprise me. I didn't notice any heat increase in anything I modded. It could be rubbing the inside of the shroud causing the pump to work harder as well....To be honest, you should try using a small disc of openly pourous spongy type material used in canister filters- I did that on a Gen-X 1500 and got 8LPM out of it....It would be a little easier to do than the mesh on something that size...

I had a couple of questions real quick. On the sedra 5000 do you need to do anything to the venturi and if so what are you doing to it? All I could find in this thread was gen-x pump mods. Also I already have my ASM G3 setup as a recirc will the mesh wheel still pull as much air this way or should I turn the skimmer back to normal first?

It does not matter what configuration the Sedra is oriented. Expect to see 12-14 lph.

A question for those that modded a Sedra 9000 on a recirc skimmer. Are you happy with your results? Did you have any troubles after the mod (pump start-up or cavitation)? Would you do it again?

Thanks in advance,
Gary

A guy in my club had a little cavitation with and is now trimming it down a hair. I think if you do the same it will fix the problem....

Gary,
I modded a friends Sedra 9000 and I had no problems with cavitation. It didn't put out as much as I expected but it was a LOT better then the stock configuration. Yes I would do it again.

I modded the Sedra 5000 on my G3 and the bubbles seem smaller but it seems to be skimming about the same as before the mod. Did I do something wrong? I drilled out the air inlet on the venturi as large as possible...I can still drill and tap for the 1/4" barb. Here's a link to where I posted pics for some fellow reefers.
