Reef Vs Wife...Yep I need help.

Okay I need someone to break this down for me. Im trying to get an additional setup in my home and my wife is concerned with Monthly electricity costs.

I have FPL (F-ing People & Lovin it) . Im at work away from my bills so I dont know what my kilowatt per hr charge is.

What would it cost me in electricity only, to run a complete 55g?

Lights-208watts 10 hrs a day
return - rio2100 @40watts 24/7
skimmer -rio2100@ 40 watts 24/7
Internal flow - rio 2100 @40 watts 25/7

Total ......4960 watts per day. Now haow do you calculate this?

there is calculatoron the left side of reefcentrals home page. Try that, kilowatt hour is usually between .06 to .15 cents

(208/1000)*10/24
+40/1000
+40/1000
+40/1000

=0.20666 kw *24 hrs/day * 30 days/month = 149kwh

Call your electric company and find out the cost per kwh and multiply by 149.

Estimate low = $.07 *149 = $10.5 per month
Estimate High = $.15*149 = $21 per month

Very economical tank.

Also note that your $/kWh is not constant, usually on a sliding scale depending on monthly usage. For PG&E in California this scale on residential peaks at about $0.37 per kWh (at 220% above baseline). My reef at these rates was costing me a whopping $70 a month (including chiller).

Assuming you don't peak at something absurd, I'd wager its well under $30/month.

Luckily I just moved to an area served by SMUD where the highest price is $0.17. Yay for ratepayer owned utilities.

if i was the sole provider for the family i would'nt worry what my spouse was concerned with when it came to my hobby, as long asthe bills were paid and the family was taken care of.

That tank would cost me $34.00/mo. But my experence is the Rios draw more than stated.

That's not how families stay together.

Families dont stay together when people have totally unreasonable expectations, and try to control their spouses.

If we were talking about car payment type money, I could see her being concerned, but for $30 a month, if shes got a problem with it, its got nothing to do with $$.

Agreed with Rich. Also my 55 uses about $25 a month to run. It does fluctuate but only $5 a month.

One thing you might think about is adding at least one more powerhead, that isn't much flow in a 4ft tank.

And the smart thing to do would be to find that out first.

But I've been married for 25 years and found that out the hard way.

At what point does it become unreasonable to limit the amount spend on a hobby which takes resources away for the rest of the family. 2 tanks, three tanks? $35-40/month helps a lot towards retirement funding.

Yeah it seems $30-40/mo is probably what the tank will cost... energy usage only, though. I know I personally spend more than energy. All consumables could be averaged out to some sort of monthly expenditure, but IME energy costs are one of the cheaper things when maintaining a tank... especially during the first 12 months when you are stocking the tank.

As far as your mate goes, you should probably come to an agreement before deciding to do whatever you want. "You can have this if I can have that." usually works wonders for me

I offset some of my tanks costs by putting flouro lights in all the fixtures in the house. If you get the right ones you cant even tell that their not incandescents. Every little bit helps.

Dawg gone! I left work and found myself on jerry springer!
Group hug fellas! I feel the love up in here......

No really. The concern is that I live in FLA. MY Elec bill has more that trippled in the 6 years Ive been here. Its not the $30 this tank is going to cost me, its the 125g, the 75g, now the 55g. Not to mention how three tekligkt fixture are going to heat the house an cause my AC to go nuts.

Now that I know my facts I can just tell her to back off the lattes in the morning so I can have my tank!!!! Woman!

No really Its all about comprimise! Its hard to complain about a $20 shirt you wife just picked up when your running 3 tanks, have an offshore boat, and only work 3 days a week!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys! How many of these can I put in a 55?

now thats a big fish.If the cost bothers her just give her $30 a month (if thats what it will cost in electricity)to buy whatever she wants. This way it costs you $60 a month but you have no *****ing. For $60 a month I think its a good deal to have your head clear. This way she can't say you are spending the money needlessly. She can do what ever she wants with her $30 and you can do whatever you want with your $30.If you decide to give it to the local power company thats up to you.Tell her to buy shoes or a purse. If you can get her to buy you fish and corals with her $30 then you have to start teaching classes.

If you are talking reef tank, than electrity is the least of your worries. I know, people say they can operate a reef on a low budget. But I don't think they take into consideration all the add expenses. Food, additives, reactor media, test kits, RO filters, prorated light and other equipment costs.... I know my systems takes about 500-600 per month to operate... Just don't want you fooling yourself, or worse your wife...

Happy Reefing.
