Pre-mixed water

How long do you keep your Premixed saltwater? I want to keep a blue water jug full, in case of a tank emergency. How long can you keep water without a heater or any flow before it starts to grow things?

It'll be stored in my mom closet, so no light will get to it.

Thanks

Personally I only keep mine for a few days. I mix it up about 3-4 days ahead of time so it mixes well. Im sure a couple weeks wouldnt hurt it if it didnt get to warm or sit in the sun.

Im not really too sure if there are specific rules regarding this though... Tagging along.

I buy 10 gallons a month, kept in two 5 gallon buckets. As long as you store it in a coverd container out of direct sunlight it's fine.

If I was going to do this, I'd buy a salifert dissolved O2 kit and measure oxygen levels during time as it sat. It'd be an interesting little experiment.

Personally, I'd just put a small powerhead with a venturi on it to pull some air and set it on a timer to run for a couple of hours daily. If you did this, you could let it sit until you swapped it out for water changes.

That would be nice for my wallet.

IMO, if during mixing a powerhead is used and preferably is aerated with an airpump then it will mainatin the oxygen levels at saturation limits.

However, some folks see some nitrite being formed if stored too long. A low level of nitrite would not be problematic especially if used to do a partial water change.

I can keep water for months if purified water is used.
