Who runs a canister filter full time?
I bought an Eheim canister filter mainly to use as a vacum for maintenance but I began to wonder if there is any reason I can't run it 24/7. Is it detrimental to the system? I have live rock and bare bottom. Right now I have high phosphates so I was thinking of running phosban in the canister for a few months.

24/7HOT Magnum without filter floss, just carbon and occasional aluminum based phosphate remover. People just get lazy and let the foam/floss get all junky.

I have one that I run constantly, but a few months ago I saw my nitrates were over 40ppm! When I ran a search on this forum, I learned the junk that canister filters trap quickly turns into nitrates. I then started cleaning mine weekly, and now nitrates have been lower than .5ppm. I guess you could take out the mechanical filter pads, but then junk will just accumulate on whatever else you have in there.

I'm running a Fluval canister filter but using it for carbon and phosphate sponge.
