AMAZING

Ralfp,

Just one word, AMAZING.

Is it possible for you to take a picture or to better explain the "Silicone joints covered with glasbars" ?

I would like to add this feature into my new glass tank.

One more Q, How thick is the glass? And if you can explian some more on the glass construction, bracing etc.

Tanks a lot

Hi all,
thanks so much again.
Welcome Miguel!

Bart,
what I use for sand cleaning/moving is:
fish: pair of Valenciennea muralis (goby), others possible like Amblygobius phalaena etc.
starfish: Archaster angulatus (I have 3 of them, digging through the sand)
cucumbers: 2 Holothuria edulis (pink) and 2 Holothuria atra (black) (originally 1 of each, they split themselves)
Well, the about 200 small (mainly red) hermits of course clean the sand-surface

br1200,
hmm, unfortunately I can't take pictures of the bars anymore (overgrown/covered with sand).
The bottom of the tank is made of three parts. All joints, were the glass-plates come together
(not only the bottom) were glued with silicone. 14 days later, about 1" wide glas-stripes were
glued (again with silicone) on all prior made joints to keep the critters away from them.
The viewing window is made of "VSG" glass, which was made of 2 x 10mm "Optiwhite" glass with 1mm foil between 'em.
(edit: so it's 21mm thick)
"Optiwhite" means glass with a reduced Ironoxide amount to reduce the green colour, normal glass has.
The surface of that window is hardened (however they do it *shrug*).
All other glass is 19mm chrystal-mirror-glass (word by word translation from german).
A frame made of powder-coated Aluminium sits on top of the tank.
(Rectangular frame with two additional braces (front to back)).
Frame and tank are stable enough to lie on, or even walk on it.

Thanks for asking!
Ralf

Hi Ralf,

My fiancee and I have been very inspired by your tank and are planning on designing our next tank like yours.

I would like to know more about the panels you have mounted to the wall on the front side of the tank. Where did you get these and what are they typically used for? I like how nice and clean it makes the tank install look. Also how hard was it to make these panels hinge for your front access to the tank?

We are in the US so I am sure we can not get the exact panels from the same supplier but would like to get something similar. I have checked our local home supply stores but thinking I might have to look more in the office furniture suppliers but unsure.

Thanks,
Scott

Upps, I read the PM first and answered there :-).
Short form for the others: I let a carpenter build the pannels, made of a syntethic material (feels like the stuff kitchen cupboards are made of, if not made of wood).
Each has a steel shadow gap around it.
A wooden frame is attachted to the wall and the pannels are mounted (removeable) to that.
Best,
Ralf

I hope you don't mind me posting a pic of your fish from your TOTM thread.

Where did you obtain this specimen?

Hi all, again a very late post... I was offline for quite a while...
Thanks for all your replies so long!

speckled trout,
hopefully you're still reading here ;-)
I bought the foxface in a local store. At date of purchase it was about 20cm long.
Now, 2 years later, it's more than 30cm and the red, yellow, orange colours are still as
powerfull as on the pictures.
If stressed or at night, the black "saddle" is divided into 2 parts.
(you can see on the picture where it splits (middle from top down).
It starts to like my hands, if doing maintenance in the tank... Nibbling at the fingers etc. and
due to the fact, that it's got poisonous fins, I hope it still likes me :-)

*,
rest of the reef is also still fine, some more P. dispars (20 now in total, needed more NO3,PO4 ;-).
I added a new (small) 100x50x40cm tank to the system to have something for
quarantine ready if needed.

Btw. the Vortech pumps (motor sitting outside the tank) with batterie support etc.
are now ready to order in the first german shop...

Best,
Ralf

I'd love to hear updates and see updated pics!

What type of hinge system did you use for your upper panels? I have similar panelling, and would like to have them open like yours.
