Venturi vs Downdraft
I've been using an MTC Power Pro IV (Venturi type) skimmer on my 500g for the past five years with very few problems. Lately, however, it seems as if at least one of the venturis gets clogged every week, which obviously affects effiency. Some reefkeeper friends of mine have been pushing me to go with a downdraft type skimmer, specifically the E.T.S.S. 1000 driven with an Iwaki 100RLT. They tell me they are far more efficient. True? I also understand the E.T.S.S. utilizes bio-balls, albeit just a few. Nitrates? I've never been a proponent of change for change's sake, but the fact that MTCs website has been down for awhile makes me nervous too.

Would you also consider a Beckett skimmer?? I have read good things about the E.T.S.S. skimmers, but I have no experience with them. I do however, use a Beckett skimmer. I am currently running an MR-2 (MRC) powered by a GenX/Mak4 on a 100g Rubbermaid to cure some liverock.
A friend of mine is an old school reef keeper. He and I set up and maintain a 240g reef tank at our church. He donated, among other things, his DIY downdraft skinner. After much deliberation, he modified it to a dual Beckett injector protein skimmer run by an Iwaki 100 (not 100% sure on the pump size). The picture below shows it before we added the additional injector.

Or, get a beckett like this using a Blueline 100 for a recirculating loop and a Blueline 40 for a feed pump:
