Help with drilling a 240
My 240 is currently at the aquarium shop getting a side pane replaced which got hit by a rock.
While it's there I was considering getting it drilled for a 1.5" bulkhead which calls for a 2 & 3/8's hole but they only have a 2.5" drill bit which should be okay, I guess. Now they do have a 3" drill bit which is the size needed for a 2" bulkhead, but I'm worried about drilling the tank, since the center of the hole will be about 4.5" from the edge of the tank and I don't want the glass to break under load after it's drilled. Do you guys think it would be ok to drill a 1.5" hole and a 3" hole on bottom plate about 5" away from the corner or would it be safer just to drill a 1.5" and a 2.5" hole, will that 1/2" to go from a 1.5" bulkhead to a 2" make a big diference as to the glass strength. I think the glass is 5/8's thick Thanks. |

I have yet to see any good rules of thumb for what is safe to drill. With the 2" bulkhead, the edge of the hole will be about 3" from the edge of the tank, which IMO ought to be sufficient. If in doubt, you could "sister" that viscinity of the bottom with some strips of 1/2" glass glued on with silicone. Alternately, you could laminate that whole section of the bottom with another piece of glass with the same size hole.

i would think as long as the bottom of the tank is sitting perfectly flush on the stand and fully supported there should be no problem what so ever with the 3" hole....
