generator saved my behind

Well I'll say this once Ill say this again. If you are fortunate enough to run a generator at your home then you should do so. I bought a 3kw Yamaha generator a year ago just in case of a blackout and sure enough it came in handy. The 3kw Generator was able to power the entire house for 21.4 hours during the outtage. I installed an automatic transfer switch so I can connect the generator to the house directly. Aquaurium, my metal halide 400watt lights, pumps, heaters, even my frig was functioning during this time. Heck I was even able to power a couple large screen tvs! While my entire neighborhood was in the stone ages, I was back to normal.

Best part is , the yamaha (one of the few) is capable of running Natural gas, propane, or gas with a conversion kit. I just hooked it up to my gas mains and I had nothing else to worry about. The exhaust wasn't bad (it was pipped to the outside anyway) and no one complained because the thing is soo quiet.

It certainly was a sight to behold, the only house in a large neighborhood with fish tank lights still running!

For those that want a smaller system, I think the yamaha 1kw gen which is very portable can be converted also and will easily run your fishtank for under $1,000.

Hell I even see a fully converted one on craigslist for $800. Be careful buying a cheap generator, they get pretty loud unless you build a box for it. hope everyone who lost power this week think nice and hard and prep up now for the next outtage which could be years away. The way I figure, most people will sell their generators once this storm passes. I'm keeping my eyes on craigslist for a backup to my generator!

How's the weather over there now? I'm supposed to head to Sacramento Monday. I checked the weather this morning and Donnors was closed.

Second storm is here, and the third is on it's way.

Compared to the rest of the US this is really not a huge deal. There were many many downed trees which in turn took down power lines. I was lucky and did not experience any power loss, but a few blocks away the school and fire department weren't that lucky. I beleive the fire department must have been on emergency power cuz it wasn't lit up like it normally is.

I stayed home all day so I could be ready when the power went out It did and I was.

I swear I could hear sirens running all day.

My generator isn't as cool as yours.
