60 Days later....FW to Reef for a Total Noob (pics)

After 4 years of having a 29g goldfish tank, it was time to start a new adventure. The goals were..... a simple and inexpensive change from a fw to a reef tank for a total noob! I soon learned that inexpensive and reef tank do not go together but one can keep it somewhat reasonable The quest started after the kind advice of many people in this forum and Robert Fenner's book "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" .

Start : 29g fw tank with metal stand.

Cleaned out tank with bleach and vinegar

45lbs live rock from an established tank of several years.

Then purchased the following hardware.
130W Power Compact lighting
30lbs aragonite
Coralife Super Skimmer 65
Jageur 150w heater
Maxijet 1200
Hydroflo rotating head
Penguin 550 powerhead
fluval 205 for carbon and purigen
ro/di setup

The next step was aquascaping and some hardy livestock

I soon realized how messy things can look in a 29G tank so the next step was making a 15g sump. I purchased a 15g tank, some glass from Lowes and a tube of silicon. After a couple of weeks I ended up with this.........

Lifereef overflow box
mag5 return pump

Overall, nothing fancy, nothing too expensive, and a lot of fun.

The adventure continues ...................................

Regards

wow that looks great. From goldfish to reef, not to bad. Usually you see people go from high end cichlid set ups to reef, so you really showed what people can do !! Sweet setup!

3 month aniversary

Thanks everyone for the kind words and advice. I hit my 3 month aniversary this weekend. Hard to believe the money I have spent so far

Not much has changed, just added a few corals one week at a time. Still doing 10% water changes every week, wondering if I can let it go every other week. My water tests, Nh3, NO3, NO4 are all zero.

Here is the lastest image taken with a Nikon D200 and the nikkor 60mm micro.

Also starting to document some of the hitchhikers.........

Peanut worm

Stomatella Varia Snail

Collinista snail

Hydroid Jellyfish - around 2mm in size

And the journey continues............

Brown Buttons

Wow! Great pics RFC. Can you tip me off to the settings you used on the camera? I have a Nikon D70 with the stock Nikor lens, and I can't seem to get decent shots up close.
