Electrocution question

I noticed that in the stupid things we have done thread that quite a few people mention electrocution as something that seems to happen.

This is something I would rather not experience. Have never had a problem in the year we have had the tank. What are the causes of electrocuting yourself? Yes, I realize all these things are plugged in then stuck in water, but is there something I should be on the look out for before I go and stick my hand in?

I know this is a pretty stupid question, but I am curious as to how I have managed to avoid this so far as I tend to do before I think.

A common thing that comes to my mind is a heater with a broken glass casing. The key to avoiding this is, do not expose a plugged in heater to air. Unplug it and give it awhile to coold down in the water first. One time this happens that people do not pay attention to is during water changes.

The only time I have been shocked, not electrocuted (otherwise I wouldn't be hear) is when I had a glass heater crack and was leaking voltage into the tank.

In my nano that is the way I went with a ranco, but in my 90 I went with a mag 9.5 which is enough to keep my tank at 78 all year. No more heaters

FYI...

Electrocution=death by electric shocK

This may be why you will catch some grief from some of the more colorful people "here" on RC

Just make sure everything is plugged into a GFI outlet and you have no worries.

Make sure everything in and around your tank is plugged into a GFCI outlet. Your tank is not worth death.

I got juiced one when i didn't have a GFI. My power strip was on the ground and i plugged something in with wet hands. It was not fun! I hit my head on the wall and where it went through me to get to ground I was tingling all day. That was back a few years ago when i first started reefin and didn't know any better. Now I use two 20 amp circuits with GFIs and the powerstrips are mounted in the stand.
