The Color Green

Just wonderin if anybody would have an idea why i cant keep Green acros Green? Every other color stays, purple pink blue. Having bad luck with green. The tank is about a year old with some of the corals being 2 years old. The greens are turning yellow. Ive tried diffrent lights and just switched to 2x250w SE Reeflux 12k Bulbs in Lumenbright Refl. Param's are great growth is great, any ideas?

I have the same problem in my tank. All my green's go yellow. I have read that it may be a lack of nutrients that causes the yellowing - though not a problem in my tank as I am currently trying to get hair algae out of the tank.

Where are all of your params?

Where is your ALK?

What do you use to dose CA, ALK?

iv knoticed greens come out better after copper added. ( found this out after some one poisened a tank at work.. corals looked good .. for a few hours)

and most of your coral vite like products contain copper... so my thinking is.. it may help

Same problem with me. Most of my greens brown out. Not all of them, but a lot of them. Pinks, purples, blues, etc. all look good. Heck, even blue tips on a green coral are bright blue, but the green is browned out.

I have the exact opposite occurring in my tank. I've bought two corals that were yellow that eventually turned green.

is your tank very low in nutrients? also what is your Magnisuim level at as i have read low levels cause green SPS to go yellow.

Alk= 10
Calcium= 390-400
Mag=1300
Nitrites= 0.2
PO4= Low, dont have a meter yet but run PO4 media in a Phos reactor.
I only feed 1-2 times a day, I think i should feed more which im goin to start doing but wouldnt most of the corals lose color. I have been thinking lack of nutrients. My skimmer works pretty good(MR2 w/PCX-55)gets really foamy and dirty then for a day or two it doesnt seem to pull alot out, almost like its needing the water to get dirty again.

for me, the green turning yellow is usually sign of lack of iron....normally, i dose iron and the green comes back up......

color change is normal in coral. It depend on your light system and your water. I have a brown sps turn to green when I use 20k radium for 8 months and when I just change to 10k reeflux about a month ago now the coral change to blue.

Lower the yellow acro in question...or shade it somehow. Watch it deepen over about 3-4 months time. It takes time.

Have a "green" millie with tons of colonies off original that is yellow so I use them to experiment. I put on under an overhang and it is greening up.

Reeflux 12K really makes blues pop from what I see from others tank around here.

High intensity blue spectrum lighting combined with lower nutrient environments cause greens to go yellow.

Where is the location of corals in question in relationship to lighting? How close are lights to surface. Raising your MH's a few inches can help too without actually repositioning corals.

yeap....iron does fuel algae....so you do have to watch it when you dose that.....

generally,

under low nutrients green will turn more yellow...higher nutrients or lack of light, more brown

actually i also find what Serioussnaps said true to a certain degree....i had a ratioactive green birdnest that turns yellow when place under direct high light....but gotten back to its intense green once it got back to the shade....

Also in dosing iron, if you have clams, be careful. Supposedly iron is believed to be a cause of pinched mantle syndrom.

Those are really interesting photos, Anthony. Makes you wonder what the "true" color for that coral is, or if there such a thing as "true color." Maybe it's only a reflection of the light spectrum...

Also can cause negative effects in coral if overdosed ... or so my minimal experimentation demonstrated.

I have the exact opposite problem as well. My green acros flourish and my orange caps look great, but my purples, blues, and pinks, turn brown. I have been very frustrated with this for some time.

My params:
Temp 79
Alk: 10 dkh (never moves)Thanks to a Ca reactor
Ca: 450 (never moves) Thanks to a Ca reactor
Nitrate - undetectable (Salifert)
Phospate - undetectable (Salifert)
Mg - 1250
SG=1.025

I run 3, 400 Watt 10K XM's with actinic supplemental lighting
and I have plenty of flow. My source water ranges from 2-4PPM.

I do have a red algae problem on my rocks and the bottom of my tank - perhaps it is related.

Not sure what else it could be. I think our problems are similar. This is a thread I will follow closely.

I have same problem as you brian . I have identical parameters , but i run 2 400k solaris lighting. My greens , orange cap great .Icant figure out whats up with the pinks ,blues ,purples.

I've been trying to narrow down this problem by process of elimination. I didn't figure it out yet.

Its been an issue for 6 months wasnt always a problem .I cant figure it out . i only feed once aday for fish & 3times a week i add live plankton for the corals. I ajusted my lights from 6800 to 10000k to 15000k to 20000k ,still no change in there look they still grow great just dont color up. STUMPED>>>>
