Liopropoma Carmabi

Where do I get one?

Am I going to have to get it internationally?

well, the $90 dollar price tag doesn't help, but you can find them if you do a google search for candy basslet.

Pretty fish though!

I wanted one of those too. My old LFS before he closed up was able to get one. It retailed for $399 at the time. I would bug liveaquaria to see if they can get you one.

I've seen them on the Divers den at liveaquaria a few times this past year. I would watch for them on there.

you've most likely seen Liopropoma swalesi. it is the pacific ocean cousin of L. carmabi which is from the atlantic. the carmabi is much brighter. the swalesi is the same color but a little more dull. i've had one for 3.5 years and he is very secretive (i sometimes don't see it for days on end) but very hardy and has a great personallity.

My LFS had one around 2 years ago and it was sold for over $600. Haven't seen one since and they get alot of hard to find livestock.

Fish Planet had one earlier this year. I'm on the wait list for one over there. You can talk to them to get on the list.
Old Town also had one listed on their website as having it earlier this year. They are probably more likely to get another.

EDIT:: Sorry I thought I was in another forum. Old Town Aquarium has a website and they ship. Located in Chicago.
They often get these more rare fish. Good luck!

They are going for 1k wholesale now when you can find them... They are a deepwater cave dwelling species so they are difficult to capture from what I hear.

They are also very shy at first and would get lost in a large tank...and at that price I would want to see it once and a while to make sure all is well

It's not only that they are deepwater, but the area they used to be collected in is no longer harvesting them. So now, you have to get them from a collector in Florida that specializes in dw animals. He happens to be a buddy of the owner of Living Sea in Chicago , so I know they can get them & do ship. Most do go to Japan & Asia since they buy more than 1 at a time.

The fish should realistically retail for around $1,200 with the current going rate. Once in a while, a couple pop up from Brazil or Nicaragua, and they are much cheaper, but it's all luck finding them.

So, is the fish pictured in the first post of this thread (Liopropoma carmabi, the high priced and rare species) the species from the carribean?

yes, the pics above are carmabi. swalesi doesn't have any purple in it, most are actually pale and almost transparent between the orange.

this is what L. swalesi looks like (he got eaten by my L. susumi)
