A Kid Riding the Train to Indiana

Friends from Indiana came to Minnesota last week to visit. While they drove here from West Lafayette as a family, their middle son stayed a few extra days to visit school friends and had an Amtrak ticket home to Indiana.

The Amtrak trains pass through Detroit Lakes in the middle of the night. Tyler arrived at the depot and hopped aboard the train at 2:30 in the morning. He settled in and slept through the night.

Only when he saw the Rocky Mountains did he realize that he was in northern Montana instead of West Lafayette, Indiana. He had hopped the west-bound train instead of the east.

He called home, and with a few phone calls to Amtrak, the parents were able to get him on an east-bound train and home.

LOL, that sounds like something I would do. But in the end, I'd probably sit in a corner and cry until someone noticed that I was missing....

If he was old enough not to be frightened, sounds like a fun trip--I'd rather have woken to the sight of the Rockies this morning than our Hoosier landscape!

I guess nobody from Amtrak looked at the boys ticket when he boarded the train?

That info certainly changes my vacation plans. I wonder if Amtrak goes to Nassau?

Most of the time, it suits me fine but there's something about mountains that strikes a chord for me.

There is still snow in our mountains - I'm not sure how deep it is yet as we haven't gotten around to driving up there but a few days ago they were having blizzard conditions on top, close to a foot of new snow. Just a skift of snow here was all we got... (besides the 5" of rain)
