I'm having the exact same problems - low flow through sump (~8X system volume) with only a portion T'd to the fuge. I'm getting cyano and muck buildup, but it's a PITA to retune my skimmer and avoid surging drainlines. But it needs to be done....

My understanding in regards to refugium water flow has alway been that you want fairly slow turnover from the tank and through the refugium.

But on the other hand good water flow in the refugium itself is helpful. So a smaller return pump to the tank, and a good sized circulation pump for the 'fuge seems to be a pretty good solution.

Thank you all. I might try the MJ 1200. I don't want a build up of heat. Thank you for the link. I'm going to check it out now. =) Is there a way to tell how much low you have through your sump/refugium? =/ Don't know how to calculate it. Thank you again.

read the article. I can't install a spray bar I don't think to keep the cheato ball moving. The best bet for me is a powerhead. I wouldn't know how to distribute flow with one to keep the cheato in motion constantly. Does anyone know or have examples?

Place the PH on the back of the fuge, discharge pointed up, run a tube with a T to the surface, and T in both directions towards ends, add tube to extend where you want, then put Ls on the ends to point flow. Make the tube ID the same size as the discharge on the MJ.

It's your fuge, so it doesn't have to be pretty, just functional

Not to kick the hornets nest but did anyone already suggest getting rid of the fuge?

I am wondering, why would you want to get rid of a fuge?

MarineGirl411,

many that run BB don't have a fuge and see it as a place to trap nutrients, in your case, when properly setup (good flow, lighting if you want to harvest chaeto for example) it will benefit the tank,

but if you are not going run it properly, than it would be a good idea to take it off line, but for a matter of fact even the main tank without proper setup would lead to issues,

ex. DSB with little flow, inadequate filtration, overfeeding, can only lead to problems,

so, try to find a way to add good circulation, etc, and all will be fine,

sam

Well there is no sand in the fuge. I have extra LR and harvest Chaeto. My main display has a great amount of flow. I have the Sequence Reeflo Snapper on a CL. I do have a sandbed in the main display. I don't like the BB look. Or I can't get used to it right now at least. I want to add a PH to the refugium so I can get better flow in there. :::sigh. I want a bigger tank. =)
