Obese fish?
I've heard of feeding koi so much that they burst their digestive trackes and die. Can you feed tangs and angels so much that they become obese and possibly die?

I suspect the problem with koi comes from feeding dry food, which the fish gulp. When it mixes with water it expands, possibly busting a gut. The same thing happens to horses if they get into a feed bin. If you feed wet food it can't happen.
There's some danger that feeding meaty food to herbivores will lead to obesity or other dietary problems. That might shorten their lives but not burst their digestive tracks.

Stuart,
Interesting bit in the last sentence. I've noticed that my rather large pacific sailfin tang will eat anything added to my tank so I've started feeding algae pellets and/or nori first then adding mysis/brine shrimp and frozen angel food after. The tang is very fat and will not stop eating all the other food. Any other ideas on getting food to the other fish in the tank (wrasses, angels, anthias)? Thanks. Scott |

Scott,
I don't know... I give my tang a big chunk of Formula 2 before I feed the rest of the tank, but he still manages to get a big share. That's the down side of mixing aggressive eaters with other fish. I think it might be OK as long as he gets enough vegetables into his gut.
