I have a sand bed that was seeded from another tank a few months ago. I also have 40 lbs. of baserock and liverock that I'm adding. Do you think if I can't supply enough pods that live black worms would be okay, or would I be better to not purchase one?

Just wait a while till the tank is more mature, since you have live sand and are adding a mix of LR and base rock, soon enough you should have enough life to supprot a wrasse. In the meantime you can add your other fish, as long as they're not to agresive and dont have the same feeding habits (Ex mandirine goby would outcompete it for food and a tang or agressive fish will stress a wrasse if its in first).

Perhaps I'm lucky, but I have an open tank and my meleagris has never come close to jumping. In addition, he took mysis/cyclopeeze from day one and now will take pellets and flake as well. He/She's as low maintenance as it gets in this hobby...

If you can, add a HOB Fuge. I did and am keeping a mandarin and the leopard wrasse while maintaining a large pod population.

If he is out and swimming you can sneak some worms in and it should go for them... that or live brine would be good...

but it is good that you do supply pods in one way or another to help him along.. either buy a HOB fuge or by harvesting them from your main tank.

If I have plans to put a sand box in the back of the bare bottom tank, how much would be required [in terms of size wise] for them to be healthy? I would probably get at least 3" deep

thats why they are pricey! Not many make it the LFS and live long enough to sell.. Not to many LFS will even bring them in... ITs to bad, they are my favorite leopard.

Funny you should say that..

I work at a LFS and we can get leopards in all the time.. we just got 2 females in a few days ago, and they are already comming out and swimming around... and eatting live brine

one is about 5 inches and the other is about 7... they are beautiful!

I think it depends on the supplier as well!

Well I have decided to culture amphipods/copepods. I ordered my blue star leopard wrasse which is due to arrive on thursday. I already have my quarantine setup, a 10 gallon tank with a smaller tank inside it filled with sand, a heater and a HOB filter. I'll let you know how it goes.

I ordered it from liveaquaria.com. Apparantly it's scientific name is Macropharyngodon bipartitus. Any additional info on this?

choats leopards are only in Australia. the australian supplier i get stuff from wont even collect them because they always arrive DOA or close to it. No one will have those in stock for a while... because they just dont make it short term or long term.

potters and bipartis are actually the easiest to keep and ship better then the rest. Bipartis are definitely awesome!

I would say a square foot would be big enough, or maybe a 9x9" pan would work.

Shawnt, most LFS can get any leopards. the choats they cannot. Many wholesalers dont bring them in anymore because they die while they hold them. If your LFS got in some choats and they are alive and well, im very glad! I've only seen one in a LFS that wasn't dying or arrived DOA... I plan to order some directly to see how they make it since aus to HNL is closer and maybe it will ease the transition...
