Leopard Wrasse Pictures and Info!
Hey you guys, at my work we got in a leopard wrasse while I was not working, I was told we had one and next time I came to work I wanted to see it... Of course, it hid for a few days but after about 3 to 5 days he poped out and said hello... so I have been looking for one for EVER... a while!
Finnally I see him and he is great looking, good health and active. so I took him home, he is in my 29gallon QT tank along with 2 blackline fang blennys I have been QTing for a while now... In just minutes after being placed in the tank he was already eatting liveblackworms and frozen mysis! He is got a fat belly already from me fattening him up! check him out, Isnt he beautiful!!! This is a male right? Im 99.9% sure it is. what do females look like.. Im thinking they have more brown on them. Post pictures of your leopards!!! This is one of my FAVORITE if not my FAV. wrasse! BTW: the QT tank is BB with only a corner of sand, which he burrows into at night it is loaded with calurpa, feather and some other type I forget to help with nutrients. it has 3 or so med peices of LR from my tank that have pods in them. So here he is:

Shawn, females look exactly like yours. Males are a green almost camo looking pattern.
With that green on the face though, I'm not sure. Might be changing to a male.

do you have some sand for him?
From what I understand these guys bury themselves at night unlike the fairy's and flashers. Nice score. |

I would get some sand in the tank for that wrasse or get it out of QT. These are not good fish for a QT tank since they need sand a usually lots of pods.
Currently, I have a gunea fowl and a potters in my reef. Here is a bad pic of my potters that I have had since 2002: |

I have an achilles and a powder brown and a small regal in the tank that I would like to place him in. I worry about this. Do you guys think he will be bothered alot? I figured when he went into the sand they will be unable to get him and that burrowing action will probably freak the fish out. I will introduce all 3 fish in QT at the same time. what are you guys thinking?

It will not do well if it is harassed. I give it a 2-5% chance of survival if it gets bullied.
I am thinking that if you have those tangs in the 75G in your sig line, then they might not like the new company. |

Virginias is a female ornate yours is a female as well Shawn though the males of yours look very similar to the ornates. I can't tell the sex of the potters pic isn't clear enough.

Here was my female African leopard. I had this fish about 1.5yrs. I then turned my 360 into barebottom and left a corner of sand for this fish- BIG mistake. My serpant star must have stumbled across it in the little patch of sand and killed it. I fed my fish at about 7pm came home 8am the next day and the star had it in its grasp. Even worse she was starting to change to amale.
Great fish, Good luck with it.

Yeah I think Ill wait... Its eatting very very well, gobbleing up Mysis like you wouldnt believe.
and seems fine so far... Ill probably just keep it in the 29 gallon and make it into a mini FO or something.... and add some sand. bahamma Oolite LIVE SAND from CaribSea sound good? The finer the better?

Do you guys think I could house 2 leopard wrasses in that 29 gallon if one is male and the other female?
what about a male from one species and my female? would this be possible?

OOOO! I got it... just thought of this... So that I can house my leopard in my reeftank... WHAT IF!
The day I want to move the wrasse and blennys I take the Achilles and Powder brown out? leave them out for a week or two to get the wrasse adjusted and then add them back?

my tangs and regal angel dont even notice my african (splendid) wrasse or black wrasse. neither do any of the fairies wrasse. in fact nobody seems to notice them but me.
on a side note, when i put my splendid wrasse in the tank, she disappeared and i didnt see her again. after three weeks of nothing i assumed i had lost her (i havent had the best of luck with leopards). then the next day i came home from work and there she was!!! after three weeks of nothing she survives and is all over the place. my black leopard came out after 2 days. much less stressfull

Same here on the other fish. I put mine in the tank and none of my BIG tangs even took a second look at him. He did hide for a few days but now spends a lot of time out in the open. Beautiful fish.

My reef fish never have paid an ounce of attention to my leopards. The semi-reef fish (achilles and emperator), did chase the established leopards a bit, but it subsided. I fear that the chasing that did happen would spell doom for a new addition.
If the tangs don't ignore them, I think that their survival chance would be small. |

I know my tangs are going to ignore it.
Kinda strange because leopards arent herbivorus, so they are not competition. I think Ill end up takeing the Achilles and PBrn out for a week or so.
