Troubles with the post office. They lost a package!
Hello,
I sent something through the post office and insured it for up to $150 but now the post office is telling me I need proof of value. Which would be the receipt I guess except I do not have the receipt. The paypal page does not say what the person is paying for that paid me for the item unfortunately. Also I thought about printing out a retailer page with their price, but their prices are all going to be new. I sold the item to someone on here. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks. |

Print the retailer page with the new and higher price and show that to them. They won't pay more than the insured value.

I've never had to show proof of value, I got what it was insured for.

I'm actually a little concerned about a package I have coming to me USPS. Bought a camera bag from a guy in CA and he put it into the USPS postal system last friday, July 27th. Mail has come and gone today and still no package. I'm getting worried. Already paid for the item too.

I've had packages take anywhere between 5-12 days coming from the same location via USPS
Proof of value is proof of value You need to show something to them as to what was in the package & what it was worth |

You should be find printing out any retailers price I would think, they just need evidence that it is worth whatever it was insured for. That way people don't insure for $1000 when it's worth $5.

I went to my post office on Saturday and was told that the package was delivered on the 31st. The staff member told me that they had this information on the computer with some details, however something was wrong with their printer so she said she would mail it to me by Monday. Now I contacted the person who should have received the package and they replied: Sounds like it might have gotten delivered to the wrong address i will ask some of people who live around me or it got stolen from my front porch i got a card for redelivery for something on the 29th i thought it was some thing else which i was delivered on the 1st i wonder if it was your package? will they insure it if it was taken off my front porch? What will happen if it did gets stolen? Will I still be able to collect on the insurance? Thanks. |

I seriously doubt that if they post office shows it was delivered that they will pay up if it got stolen off of the porch.
Did you pay for signature confirmation? I have gotten into the habit of anything that is important paying for signature confirmation. I have had too many bad things happen with all of the different shipping places. I had never had any problems with UPS until I moved here 8 months ago. USPS...I have had major problems with them for the past 7 years. There service seems to be going down hill and fast. Sorry for your troubles, but if they show it to be delivered...I am not sure you have any recourse.

Honestly the print out would be pretty boring, basically the insured number and the delivered scan next to it, however if they left the package in a open unsafe place you should be repaid as a lost package, our carriers are never supposed to leave packages out in the open. The burden would be proving they left it unprotected.

Proving it is sometimes easier than you think. Post office said one of my packages was left on the front porch on a white chair at the blue house. I don't have a porch or white chairs outside and my house is brick. "it happens" and I had to send that proof to the place I order the package from.

Interestingly the post office printed out the confirmation that they did deliver the package to this persons house. The person is claiming that they did not receive the package. However the post office left a notice on the persons door. The person has not commented on this which I questioned them about in my last pm (whether or not they received it). I do not think anyone would steal the notice?! What is the point in selling me insurance if its not going to work because of a technicality!!! What a joke! I am so mad and sad because I do not have the $175 to spare in order to reimburse this guy! What should I do???

What did you claim was in the package on the shipping reciept? It's not that hard to come up with high dollar quotes for a variety of items using the internet. Just find some vendors that offer what you sold at higher prices and then show an e-mail or something where you agreed to the $150 price for it.
The benefit of the doubt is on your side here.

If the package is still at the post office the recipent should be able to just go down and pick it up without the notice. I had a package shipped to me and never got the notice, but checked with the PO and they had the package. If they have the package and its not picked up it will be returned to you, undelivered.

I am in the same situation right now with another member on this board he got my package but I have not recieved his from over a week ago; I know that he sent it but it has not shown up here I keep missing the post man so have not been able to ask. Being in an apartment complex they have the package boxes that they leave a key in your mailbox for so its not easy for someone to steal but I can't imagine where it could be he is trying to work with the insurance part to see if a) they can find it and b) if not to get the insurance to pay. I have not had good luck with USPS in my business either they have "lost" several packages that were never to be found or returned leaving me out the money since I could not track them.

If the post office shows confirmation of delivery then as the sender you have done your part...would you be surprised to know that some people just SAY they didn't get it...
I have added a note to my shipping info that says if you chose shipping via USPS, confirmation of delivery from the post office will be sufficent to deny any claim of non-delivery. UPS, FED-EX and DHL all have delivery signature confirmation service. On another note: I've lived at the same address for 13 years and after my regular postal carrier retired (a sad day indeed) every replacement since has NO IDEA AT ALL about the difference between 63 Street and 63 Place. To make matters worst, the moron who own the used car lot on 63rd Street thinks because his trailer is set at the back of his lot it must be 63rd Place. I have come home to find a truckload of tires delivered in my driveway, new phone service ( AT & T insisted I ordered 5 lines put in) packages of all sort....I've talked to the owner a dozen times to no avail....one of these days their going to deliver a BMW or sometime nice and I'm gonna keep it....
