califonia or round sting ray
on the spur of the moment I bought one, love haveing it in my tank which is a 55 ( I am looking to upgrade to a 125 ) however he is always on the walls of my tank and hardly ever on the sand looks like he is trying to get out can anyone give me some advice about him

You probably have a Urolophus halleri. There have been a number of juveniles at wholesalers this year. I prefer to keep them in cooler water, (68 degrees) although they do range south to Panama, so I suppose they can handle cool- tropical temperatures.
The "wall climbing" is probably not a real problem - one that I have did that when it was in quarantine, and then settled down when I moved it to a larger tank. One concern - if your substrate has a large number of bristle worms and/or copepods, or if the substrate is too large and too sharp, the ray may well be trying to stay up off the bottom. The key would be - does the ray go to the bottom to feed and does it settle down at night? If it does, then I wouldn't worry. Jay Hemdal |
