DT's phytoplankton consists of live microscopic algae. A large dose can turn the water green for a little while until the algae is eaten by all the consumers in the tank. It should clear up on its own unless the algae is growing faster than the consumers can eat it.
If the color stays for more than an hour or so then either 1) you fed way too much or 2) the nitrate / phosphate in the water was high enough to kick off an algae bloom. In either case, chemi pue will probably not remove the algae. A protein skimmer is the best bet. Also test for nitrate and phosphate and work at getting them down. A UV sterilizer can "cure" green water syndrome, but it's not ideal. Basically, the UV kills the algae cells, which then decompose, and the water clears up. However, the decomposing algae add nitrate and phophate back to the water, which can trigger another algae bloom. |

and I agree with Block The water can be cleaned up with a diatom filter if one wants to go there and it is even better if it is done after UV treatment.

well
i have a protein skimmer and it has been green for 2 weeks almost. I also checked the levels and they are actually good. hmmm will that diatom filter work. i would try the uv sterilizer but i was looking at them and it looks like there pretty expensive. i dont know what to do.

Glad to hear it cleared up.
Even though phosphate is reading low, it could be because the algae was eating it up. The fact that there was a bloom tends to indicate an excess in nutrients. I assume that you are using RO or RO/DI water for the tank. If not, then you could be getting phosphate in the make-up water. I don't know about Buffalo, but here in Virginia, the tap is loaded with phosphate. Even with good make-up water, you will be adding phosphate from food. If problems persist, you might want to consider some form of export, either macroalgae or GFO. Again, glad everything's back on track. |
