SPS stinks

I got a colony for free from a fellow reefer today. It was brown and whiting/bleaching from the base up (is that rtn or stn ?)

So i got it home, acclimated it chopped it up and threw all the bleached parts out. Glued all the healthy looking pieces together on a frag disc. It looks nice

But damn did it stink. Really stink. I hadnt noticed before but i picked up one of my healthy colonies and it did stink too.

Now i read that if it stinks, seems as its still alive and might make it...? Seems consisten with my other colony.

Any input appreciated.

PS. it came with a little acro crab as a hitchhiker too, which was nice.

SPS for the most part are nasty smellin. If the coral is dead it will still have that reef tank stench but it wont smell like what you smelled today. If it slimed up on ya at all its not dead.

If its dead you will know it. There is the distinct alive acro odor and the odor of acro decay and death.

after smelling many dying acros during my AEFW ordeal, i have actually grown to like the normal acro smell - there is definitely a difference.

I think it was Calfo who said "I love to sniff my fingers after I handle my coral."

One of the bigger surprises for me when I started acros. Very distinct smell.

They got nothing on my hairy mushrooms though... whoa they stink.

Healthy acros have such a good smell. I love when I take a colony out to frag and you just get that "good" smell.

I even have them pull them out of the tank at the LFS and smell them. People think i'm weird, but you can definetly smell a good acro.
