purple monster knowledge

i got a colony couple weeks ago, and was wondering if this coral is a purple monster/granulosa, currently its color is light lavender to purple color and dark purple, (being under different lighting) and it has white polyps(not normal acro type). i will get a picture soon. but was wondering if anyone knows could this be one but yet to be? thanks.

The only way its a Purple monster if it can be traced back to Tyree. here is a link to what it should lookl like.

actually i didn't care if it was tyree or not, just wanted to know if it was one, here is a pic of it. the color is changing to a darker purple(if its purple) day by day.

The only way you can call it a "purple monster" is if you can trace it back to Tyree, since he had the original colony.

By the way, what you have in the picture doesn't look much like the PM.

"the only way you can call it a purple monster is if it can be traced back to tyree"

I totally understand the point you are all trying to make with stating this, but if you think about it, its absolutely absurd of us to think that tyree is the only person who could possibly have the actual coral we are all referring to. Tyree got his original colony from the ocean. Do you think that the peice he got was the only peice in the ocean? NO WAY!!!
Yes, for the sake of tracking a coral back to its original "finder" its useful to say that it is only a purple monster if it came from tyree (either directly or indirectly), but it is ludicris to think that there aren't going to be other corals that come up that look like his, grow like his and probably are THE EXACT SAME CORAL. The only difference is, it didn't come from him.
SO, you might have the exact same coral as tyree, however (and its unfortunate it works this way) tyree's name can't be put on it if it can't be traced back to him. Why does this matter? Well, it shouldn't and I think its ridiculous that we all think a coral is special just because we know who originally found it, but for some reason this is the way it is.
Oh well, at least you can enjoy it for a fraction of the cost of what you would pay if it did come from tyree!

I agree with hatfielj, the ocean is full of purple monsters

If you must pay for a name, then more power to ya. It is a purty coral.

it matters because the tyree purple monster has been in captivity for years, so is much hardier. and i have yet to see one look the same amongst thousands of colonies i have browsed in person and online. not saying there won't be something else that looks like it, just that it wont' be the purple monster, but rather a pm lookalike, and should be referenced as such

you are paying for the pedigree, an established record of success.

Is there a general consensus as to the PM's species?

I could not agree more, Plus its a rare coral that has yet to be ID. But my question is why are you getting upset with what we are telling you. I think you wanted to make a quick profit on a look a like the only problem is it does not look like a true Purple monster(tyree) If you want a PM buy one

Well, I got a false PM (A. maryae) a while back. It's growing into a decently attractive coral, but slowwww..... Not sure if it's the same as yours, but maybe.

Mine only gets the blue/purple under direct bright light. Even the slightest shadow from, say, an upper banch, will cause the tissue below to be a lavender/brown/purple color.

also, i noticed your piece has the similar shape as mine does as well. and mine came from a low lighting tank so, the colors were way off, so i figure couple more weeks till i see some real difference.

I have a frag of blue monster (an A. austera) and OMG it is the absolute slowest growing coral in my tank. I would love to have any coral that is the color of the one in Tyree's pics...maybe I should look for a purple hoke or something? A PM knock-off would be okay if only I could get that awesome color!
