replace seals on the motor and dont even worry about tranny problems.sentras unlike maximas dont suffer from trannys.i work at a salvage yard and most have at least 5 trannys on stock because they dont sell.

Well, we just paid $3200 for our '97 Firebird engine rebuild. That also included a new water pump and temperature sensor. And, it was going to cost $800 for the tranny to be gone through...if we brought it in to the shop. We ended up not doing anything to the transmission. It is fine, just thought that we would have it done since the engine would be out, but money did not allow for that.

My husband was going to do the work himself, bought the cherry picker, air compressor, and many other doodads he didn't already have. He started tearing it all apart, came into the house and said he felt overwhelmed. All I said was, get on the phone and call around for price comparisons. Consider the air compressor and other doodads a Christmas gift, and return the cherry picker. It's not that he doesn't have the know-how (he's even gone to mechanics school), I feel it's that he wasn't at his Grandpa's with a ton of work space and every tool known to mankind! (Did I ever tell you that we changed our transmission on our Jeep for our honeymoon~aren't we romantic!)

Anyway, good luck to you. I keep thinking that $3200 plus what we spent on the tools would have gotten me into a great new car! And, I don't even like driving the Firebird, it's his car. I drive an old Rodeo that ticks, has an oil leak, and is so faded it's not worth washing, but it starts every day, and gets me where I'm going!

Sheesh, and when I redid my Fiat the rebuilt engine cost me 500. How time flies!
