Question Do I Need A Protein Skimmer?

36 x 18 x 12 planning to be fish, inverts and soft corals.

at the moment in a "between fish stage" long story

tank is cycling with LR, 2 x banded shrimp and one bristle star

what is the advantage of setting up a protein skimmer and what are the alternatives?

thanks
Peter

It will help with the learning curve.

It will pull waste out of the water that your regular filtration will not.

I really tried to find a reason not to buy one but after I have seen what it pulls out of the water I am glad I added one.
With that said...there are many very successful tanks that do not use one.
One alternative is an algae scrubber. I know very little about the concept but it works for some.

You don't HAVE to have one, but once you see what it pulls out of your other wise clean clear looking water, you'll WANT one.

And remember, a skimmer doesn't HAVE to be extreamly expensive to work well. THe $40 off ebay won't work worth a poo, how ever I got my coralife super skimmer 65 used, for $35. Check your local club forums and see if any one has a used one for sale, or buy a new one. What ever floats your boat!
