Brown algae
Hi everyone!
My 50g, 180L reef has been set up for about 6 months and it has gone though all the usual types of algae blooms. At the moment I have a aprox 50L sump which I intend to make into a refugium. My nitrates are 5 and I am getting alot of brown algae on my sand and rock. I have trochus, deep sea water and turbo snails and a burned sausage cucumber but it dosn't go away. Is this a bloom or is something wrong??? your help is greatly appreciated!! thankyou |

It's a diatom outbreak. This is normal for a tank's cycle. It will go away on its own.

Diatoms need silicates to build their cell wall. The best defense is an RO system to remove soluable silcates from your tap water.
