My New Gymno Melatramus
I just got my new G. Melatramus. I got him from a diver in Hawaii who sells to the public at a great price. He ate some fresh cockles as sonn as he got into the tank. He befriended my baby snowflake as soon as he entered, pics below. I've had him for 2 days and this eel eats like he's twice the eel that he or she is. So nice to deal with a collector directly. Happy New Years all!!

I was bit concerned as well. I was always thought that melatramus were very reclusive. This guy comes out just as much as my snowflake. He is quite an agressive eater. I'm very happy with this eel and got it for a great price directly from a diver. He's getting me a pair of crosshatches in a month or two. Anybody else have pics of these eels. Tim

It's about 10" long. I can't believe how much he swims around. He eats like a pig and is more agressive when feeding than the snowflake. Tim

Yep I have one too. I keep in my reef tank and its an ideal inhabitant. I've had it for 5 months now and absolutely love it. Yours is a deeper coloration than mine though. Here's a pic:

In my very limited experience of having only two eels, both have been very active for the first week or two, but then they settle down and act as I've read they do. When my dwarf settled, she became very hard to find. There were times I wondered if she was dead because I could go a week failing to find her. Then after about 1.5 years or so, that too wore off and now it's not uncommon for her to be sitting 1/3 out of the rocks or even make the occasional swim to the other side of the tank. Don't be disappointed if this very active behavior wears off .

he's searching for a way out if he is swimming around a lot. Make sure it is covered or he WILL get out.
there are a ton of color variants for these guys. i've seen pretty much all of them, from all white to bright yellow. both are very nice!
