Generally, you don't want to completely cover the tank, like with glass. If you must, to prevent a fish from jumping, use egg crate or some plastic mesh or something. Glass keeps fresh air from getting to the tank which can keep the pH low.

All right then. I'm not to worried about fish jumping. Its my cat, I dont want it licking the water or playing in the tank.

i think that once your cat touches the lens covering the bulb it will learn quite quickly not to go there again...these things get HOT! lol
