my new peacock mantis

Just received my new Peacock Mantis. Not sure how you can tell if it's a female or male. So far it's doing fine, burrowing into the sand and into a cove in the live rock. It's about 3.5 inches long, and I have it in a 20 gallon tank with a 2 inch clown. Everyone is getting along fine!

Hey crasten123, congrats on the new mantis!

To determine sex on most mantis, you will need a really good side view. A view from below is better, but not easy once they are in the tank. Males actually have two penises, attached inside the last pair of walking legs (they have 3 pairs of walking legs)... they basically look like another set of small legs. Female reproductive organs are small slits or holes located between the first pair of walking legs.

Having said that, you can sometimes determine sex on a peacock by how bright and color it is - males more so than females - but I'm not the one to make that call here.

Dr. Roy has pics and more info on mantis sex (which I'm paraphrasing) here:

Good luck!
