Suggestion's For a Pump for my new Oceanic 120 Tech Series SPS Tank

I just bought a Oceanic 120 Tech Series,I am setting it up bare bottom for SPS corals mainly,I want to use a dry pump for the return and a closed loop.Can I use the same pump or should I use 2 pumps?Also what is a good quite dry pump and also easy on the electric bill as I have heard that some use significant more electicity than others.Thanks in advance for any input,Chris

I would say 2 pumps. This way you can use the closed loop for flow and crank it up. The other pump you can run slower to go through your sump/fuge for better contact with things such as the skimmer, RDSB, or macro-algae.

2 diffrent pumps. I would use a Sequence snapper or dart for closed loop and an oceanrunner 2500 for a return

Seconded.

Also, it wouldn't be a closed loop if you used the same pump as the system return. You need 2 seperate pumps.

Have you already drilled your tank? If so, where are you putting your bulkheads?

The tank come with the holes predrilled for the bulkheads and the returns.

How many holes are in the overflow?

The returns are in the middle about 20 inches apart.

Ok so there are two return holes? How main drain holes? I am trying to understand how you are planning this? I always though that there was one drain and one return.

On the tech 120, there is only one overflow, right?

tech 90 and 120 have two drains, two returns within one overflow rear/center. the predrilled holes are in the euro bracing two on each side of the overflow.

Ya it has one overflowbox but it is split in half so it has 2 returns and 2 drains.Plus it has 4 holes in the rim around the top for a closed loop bulkhead fittings.This supposed to be a tank mainly made for SPS.

i was reading a thread recently and there was a debate as to whether you could do a closed loop over the water level or it had to be under the water level. didn't get much info from the thread as one guy swore it could be done and the other said it wouldnt' work.

have you considered that? asking because my 70g tech tank is still in the start up stage and i'm on the fence as to how to plumb things up to take advantage of the eurobrace holes.

That is one thing I was originally trying to get at. I do not think the over flow is rated for enough to really make the closed loop worth it. What are the tech series overflow rated at? I think I once read that they can only handle 1800 gph.

No I did not think about that,but one of the guys at Excotic were I bought it from said he has the same tank and he runs the closed loop with the eurobrace holes.I am going there tomorrow to pickup the stand so I will get some more info on how he did it and let you know.I am still at the planning stage to,but want to get it up and running soon .But I also want to plumb it right with the right equipment ,so I do not say I should have done it that way instead, but that will probalbly happen any way!!

600 -650GPH for each overflow. I have a Mag 9.5 running to each of mine on a 90 Gallon Tech Series. It's about all it can handle. both pumps are running full out.

If you are looking for pump suggestions, I would go with an eheim 1262 as my return and I would get one or two vortech's; especially if you are going BB. I think there was a couple for sale in our local forum for $365. I just picked one up Chris and I am really impressed. I was thinking of getting a second.

It depends, are you planning on running a chiller? It is all personal though. I personally do not want 20X turnover through my sump. Are you planning on A DSB or refugium?

I hung a Tunze 6101 on the other side of my overflow box (opposite my return line) on my 70 Tech. It's out of the way, tucked in the back nicely.

i've about given up on trying to figure creative closed loop options and am now looking at this to mount in the center of the overlow. only problem; they haven't been released yet.

Closed loops are great on big tanks, but with all the products out today for flow, I think there are other options that make sense as well.
