Built this IN the stand. It is too large to take out of the stand.
First pictures without baffles...front. Back... All glass is 1/4" thick black. Front is clear. Spraybar for the refugium. With Baffles... Return Pump Section...(Yeah 2 pumps...) A little Video of the 'fuge in action... Click Here |

Here is my home made acrylic sump.
Here it is working while I cycled my tank. Here it is right after I finished building it. |

Thanks everyone!! Especially the more simple designs. Those are easier for us rookies to understand. lol
Do most of you prefer external return pumps?

Where does the intake for your T4 go to in your sump ? I didnt know you could plumb an external pump this way. I thought it would drain back when the power is off and lose suction, as it has to come up and over the sump wall ? |

my sump/refugium is very simple... it is a 5.5 gallon standard tank with no baffles... this is for my 30 gallon cube... the tank used to have a hang on protein skimmer with no sump/refugium... i had a constant problem with excess nutrients and the main reason for adding the sump is to grow cheato and so i can use a much larger protein skimmer... even though the sump does not have any baffles, i do not have problems with micro bubbles because i am only running about 70-90gph through the sump using an Ehiem 1250 return pump... the only "baffle" the sump has is a 1 gallon Gatorade bottle with the top cut off... this is to provide the skimmer's feed pump a constant water level...

You prime it by putting a "T" in the return line with a screw cap fitting (( See picture )). Put a ball valve below it in the sump, close it off and fill with water. When the line is all full of water screw the cap back on. Turn on the pump, open the ball valve and away you go. Sounds more complex then it really is. 2 out of 3 of my sumps are that way, and have been running for 4+ years without issue. BTW -- it is a T2.
