I think it is a great idea, Gary.
The U.R.S. is and has been a solid reef club full of knowledge that has been passed back and forth for years to its ever growing members and local community such as the Zoo and many others.

Agreed.

Just going by post count (not necessarily a good measure, I understand), there are only two other club forums that are higher than URS.

I think this speaks to the club's longevity, and the activity of its members on these boards.

Personally, I feel that the information I glean from the URS forum is more trustworthy and experience-tested than the rest of RC.

Go for it!

I hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving.
I can't imagine there are any objections to this idea.

Are there?

What we'll need to do is put together an article explaining/describing our club. Any info is welcome: activities, meetings, officers, website... tell the world all about your club, what you do and how you operate. Pictures are good, too. If there are enough of, for example, a club event or member's tanks, etc., then we'll try to make a slideshow.

It would be great to have people help with this project- I can't do it alone.

Gathering names and pix of URS aquariums would be an obvious first step. Perhaps somebody could assemble something on this year's events with Anthony Calfo, Sanjay Joshi and melev. (Make sure to get permission to use pix that aren't yours!)
Any takers?

hey- looky what I found.. a pic of some the founding URS members!

Gary,

So do you have a list of all the current members who payed dues or would you prefer to keep it open? If you have a list then people who want to submit from it can submit a single photo as a starter next to a name and location kinda like the Reefcentral avatar stuff to keep it simple.

1) Name
2) Tank Photo
3) Optional Website
?
I'm sure full bios and decriptions will be too complex

thanks for volunteering to help, Ellery!

This RC club spotlight thing would encompass URSNY (the dues paying sector of the club), so it's "open".
I don't keep track of all the URS members.
I don't expect you to have to chase people down and I'm certainly not going to do that either.
People will have to realize that the URS is what they make it- or don't make it. If people don't participate here it won't happen- simple as that. Hopefully peeps will cooperate.
If not, we can see what other clubs are doing when they're featured.

Where can we "post" this information? If right here is fine, then I'll begin with a brief summary of myself and how I became interested in the hobby. I will add a current picture of my tank and some highlights from URSNY that have influenced the way I keep my system.

Gary,
My skills are in writing and organizing. Definately not photography. If I can find the right posts or archives for backround to read I'd be more than happy to take a shot at a summary, outline, work plan and some narrative for your review.Perhaps, as Magdellan suggests a good place to start would be to invite all URS folks to submit some information. An initial thought on the questionaire might include:
Name
Occupation
Hobby Experience
Brief Aquarium description and photos
Why do you have a passion for this hobby?
Why do you value URS?
Memorable Moments-Note URS events or interactions with members that have been satisfying to you, have enhanced your husbandy or were just plain fun.

I sent in my $$ for dues, and didn't receive anything back. Should I have gotten anything back? I will have to go back and see if the check was even cashed.

In case it didn't get cashed, how do I sign up and pay dues at this point in time?

Showcasing our URS forum would include all of us that do not pay dues to URSNY as well correct?

You/we can use any of my images taken at the reef crawl, if larger versions are wanted other than what can be found at my .mac account they can be forwarded.

I don't mind helping out if needed.

Chris- I'll get back to you about this ASAP in a PM.
Mike and Tom- both of your ideas and suggestions are good ones. I think we should have all URS members willing to participate post their info to a new thread here in our forum. My sincere thanks to every person offering to help with this project.

Well Keep in mind that this is only a 1 pager with the following requirements:

We'll be implementing a new column in Reefkeeping Magazine titled, "Club Showcase." It will be a page in the magazine where your club will be featured and where information on your club will be provided for all our readers to see what your group is up to. We would encourage information on your club such as: how to join, its mission, history, membership info, and activities sponsored (as well as pictures, to be possibly placed in a slideshow). Another idea would be a member's "Tank Tour" in which we assembled a slideshow of your member's tanks, assuming the pictures could be provided.

I think the full page would taalk mostly about the group as a whole and the main thing that majority of the members contribute to is just the slide show of some sort but we need to inquire about the format and size of the photos they are looking for.

It would be real hard to incorporate everybody's details in one page even with a 8 pt font.

My 2 cents but I will submit whatever you need.

Actually at minimum we can get to know each other better in this short activity too if we even do a Bio's Thread for ourselves on this forum.
