return pump recomendation

I need a recomendation on a return pump for my 40g tank. I would like some where near 200-300 gph at 5 feet of head, prefereably closer to 200gph, and submersible.

Thanks for your help
John

I like the PentAir Quiet One pumps for submersible applications. according to the Flow Chart Model 2200 is what you are looking for. DFS has them on sale, and i've also seen the for sale locally at Petsmarts.

a mag 5 would probibly give you some where between 200 and 300 gph at a 5 foot head height. how are you going to be putting the water into the tank? lineloc flexible or 2 90 degree elbows? casue if you are using 2 90's that wil deff give you closer to 200gph.

I would try a Mag5 Nice and reliable. maybe you can borrow one to see what it does against 5ft head.

The mag 5 and quietone 2200 will give me close to 300gph. Should I go with something like that or go a step down and use either a mag 3 or quiet one 1200. both will give me around 200gph.

I might use a quiet one 1000 on a closed loop so flow wont be an issue in the tank.

I think the quiet one 1200 will be a bit underwhelming for you, I have a couple that I use for salt mixing, the fountain in my little water feature, etc.

I have an internal closed loop in my 75 gallon tank and I use a QO4000 for that pump. I'm quite please with the flow split between 3 outlets.

I wrote that wrong I have a QO 4000 that will be on a CL. So a QO 1200 at 200 gph will be not enough for a return?

200gph is more than enough from the sump to tank. The latest school of thought is to turn your tank over (through the sump for filtration) 2-3 time per hour. This gives things like the skimmer, and cheato a better chance to remove garbage.

by my reading of the flow chart, the 1200 at 5' of head will only do like 75gph... not very much. At that same 5' the 2200 will do about 280ish. if you underestimated your head pressure at all, (elbows, narrow pipes, etc) it will be even less. I stand by my original recommendation that a 2200 would be the best size based on the info you provided. if 200gph is your target, you could either throttle the QO2200, branch it off to feed something else, (skimmer, phosphate reactor, fuge, etc) or go with the mag 3. Personally, I also do like the mag pumps, but they seem to lose some of their oomphf over time. They also run rather warm from what I can recall.

I was basing my gph on the head loss calc. on RC not the flow rates from the manufacturers. I wander what is more accurate?

Does anyone locally have any of the pumps mentioned? If so please let me know.

John
