Am I getting old? I just don't understand teenagers

Well, my birthday is coming around again so I'm thinking about how old I'm getting (I'll be 33) - not very old in the grand scheme of things, but I think I'm starting to act like one of those adults I couldn't stand when I was a kid.

Here's an example. I keep seeing forum posts written by young folks that are basically long run-on sentences without any punctuation or capitalization, and they contain an obscene number of abbreviations and terms I don't recognize. These posts make me feel incredibly frustrated - I just don't understand how people can read and understand things written this way! I find myself cursing the text message generation while trying to decipher some meaning from their posts - it seems like there's such a huge gap between their world and the way things were when I was their age 15-20 years ago.

Am I just getting old? When on earth did I turn into my parents? Heck, I'm not even a mom yet (not for lack of trying) - how did I turn into an out-of-touch adult when I wasn't looking?

AC, it happens, ya no? Just don't get all up in their grill about it, because that would be whack. You need to have mad text messaging skills, that's all. jmho.

You got old when you started to have sex to have a baby and not just for the fun of it.

Lol! I taught highschool for 10 years, and I can assure you with some confidence that other teenagers don't understand teenagers, or I wouldn't have spent all those hours trying to explain teen behavior to other teens, either irate or sobbing at the time. Add in texting without emoticons and the possibilities for angst become mind-boggling.

I just turned 37 not too long ago, and I don't consider myself old at all. Hell, I still eat PB&Js all the time. I even know how to text and know some of the abbreviations. However, AC, I have to agree with you completely. Some of those posts I can't understand for the life of me. Most of the time I won't reply to them, because it is way too much effort to figure out what they are trying to say/ask.

After spending several years here on RC, one would think that I should know the difference between "edit" and "quote"
