would you experts recommend this sump?
hi,
I picked up a pro clear aquatics systems trickle filter with a built in skimmer for half price ($175.00 ) for my 75 gallon reef. I would like to remove the bio balls and use it for a sump. are the skimmers in these units ok? also the whole tank looks like it only holds about 7-10 gallons of water and I would use an overflow. any opinions? |

I have this wet/dry sump set up on my 90g and it works great. The skimmer is constantly pulling junk from the system. I have left the bio balls in and so far no problem.

I have used it for a couple of months. It is as you describe. I use a Mag Drive return pump. It is rated at 500 gph. I use a UV sterilizer between the sump and return so that is about the most flow I can use from the sump return.

You should remove the bioballs. You may not have a problem because of them yet, but its just a matter of when, not if!

What do you put in the place currently occupied by the bio balls?

either live rock or marco algea, or both. or nothing. just no bio balls.
Also if you have bio balls and are wanting to remove them, do so slowly, maybe a handfull of balls a day till they are gone.

I would make that a handful a week not a day. Removing them over several weeks is a better solution.

Okay, I hate to feel like I have taken over this thread, but maybe this info is useful for gerry45 as well.
One last observation/question. Presumably the live rock could exist under the cabinet without difficulty. If you choose to go the macro algea route, how much of a light source does that require and what impact does that have on water temp? What is the best macro algae source to start off?
