Angry This is becoming a problem! (pic)

Last time i ask about this algae/grass, not too many people here knew what this stuff was, it is not cheto, its some sort of grass which is really hard and even harder to remove, i tried pulling on this crap and almost pulled the rock out of it place. Any help on removing this stuff is much appreciated.

Thanks.

The only thing I can suggest is get a tripneustes gratillis urchin [seems to eat most anything] from Foster/Smith---and specify small! THey grow like crazy. They are however careful around corals, and can eat everything but the roots.

Second and most important half of this two-pronged attack, now that your urchin has pooped the phosphate in this stuff back into the water column, is set up a 20g refugium with cheato and keep its lights on 24/7. That will uptake the phosphate and make a permanent dent in this stuff.

And if you have used tap water, or flake/pellet food, don't. Check your ro/di tds. Be sure it's zero. And be sure your lights are up to date.

I believe that there is a thread somewhere on RC that high magnesium levels will make this stuff disappear really quick without advers effects on the restof the tank. I rememeber reading it a few moths back, but I can't recall the forum....

I had that EXACT same stuff on a large rock in my 10G. I bought one large emerald crab and within 2 weeks it was all gone.

I have that in a few spots, only popped up once I added halides, didn't grow at all in 1 1/2 under NO bulbs, popped up a tiny bit under pcs and grows best under halides it seems. Mine doesn't really spread though, I buried a couple rocks and manually pick it off the one spot it grows in my Aquapod. Interesting thing though, the rocks it grows on look identical to your rock, that bumpy look. Now I've noticed it growing on my powerhead so it must be spreading somehow but no where else yet. I've never got a positive id on it either.

I dont think its bryposis, if you look really close at that picture from melevs you can see that there are tiny little branches coming out of the main branch kinda like feathers. Mine is smooth just like cheto.

Ya I have has this too. I just pulled it out of the rock from time to time. Dont know what it is though. I find that it grows best in areas with lots of detritus biuld up. Once its in you tank you cant get ride of it only control it.

I had some of that in the past. Its some kind of turf algae I can't remember. Its very tough like the bristles on a tooth brush and is not bryopsis.

I never had it spread except from direct contact. The only way I got rid of it was by chiseling it off.

I've had that stuff before, too. Very strange. It's like Cheato turf. It grows on one small rock in my tank. Luckily the rock is in a place I can remove is and peel it off. Comes off in one large chunk then grows back in a few months.

I have something that looks very similar and my LFS said it might be Maiden's Hair algae. They recommended a royal urchin, but I decided to just throw the covered rocks into a fuge and replace with new LR.

If you can keep it isolated it would be a great nitrate export!
