Visible form 3 sides?....

How difficult is it to make a tank visible from 3 sides? I was considering placing the 150g that i am going to set up perpendicular to the wall, i.e. at a right angle. Since it is 24" front to back, i think it can be done. Problem is, the tank is a RR tank so it has the built in overflow. Is there anyway i can remove this overflow and cap the drilled hole? I could use a hang on overflow instead. Any thoughts or anybody with a tank that is set up like this?

I've got a 90 set up that way. I am also interested in getting new lights for it. I would like to get a pair of 250 MH and a pair of actinic VHO. I need to find a design for the canopy so that I can open up at both sides. I haven't been able to find one yet, so maybe I'll just use the regular designs and modify it.
I guess I didn't really help you with my post, I'm not that much of an expert since my tank has only been running for just under a year.
Good luck.

I have a 58 set up as a room divider. This does leave the guts of the overflow visible, but it's not really that bad. After setting it up this way, I would never go back to the flat to the wall position my last tank was in.

Rolo,

I designed a hood for this purpose prior to changing my mind and going with a pendant. Basically, it is supported at either end of the tank, with the sides being long doors which would swing up out of the way (clam shell). The end closest to the wall would be open (except for a couple of 2" wide supports) and the opposite side would contain 1-2 cooling fans. I expect that it would take probably 5-10 hrs of labor to put one together like this.

I have a RR with center overflow that I use to view from all sides. My overflow is see through so you can see the PVC drain and returns but it does not seem to take away from it. Look at my site and see what it looks like before you remove the overflow. I would not worry about the overflow on one side. You could use a razor to remove the silicon but I do not recommend it.

My hood it also for 360 deg viewing. I wrapped all the wires into about a 1" thick bundle that goes down the back of the tank. It does not obstruct the view very much.

Do not use the hang on overflow. This would look worse than the overflow. Worse case you remove the overflow and just use a durso with a prefilter and wrap your LR around it to hide it.

I actually like looking in the overflow. Some weird critters go in there and occasionally a fish that I have to retreive.

I have a 220 set up this way. I'm not sure how you'd plug the holes, but removing the overflow chamber would be easy enough. If you do it, don't make the one mistake I did. I only had one overflow and one return hole drilled. Now I have to cut my return pump way way back. Have a second set of holes drilled and you'll be much happier.
