Glad others are trying this mod.

I think that if you make the new magnet, prop assembly the same length as the stock one it will always spin the correct direction without a stopper. I haven't tried it though.

Anyone tried a really big prop on this thing?

What happens when you start it out of the water then put it in?

The one I gave you was an Octura 2035. Are you using that with the stock magnet or a MJ 1200 magnet?

I was using an octura 1440 (about the same size as the 2035) with a MJ 1200 magnet.

yeah at first just for the hell off it I did use a large prop, but then I used one that was like a Octura 2035. The prop didn't have a name on it when I got it from the hobby store so I am unsure what it really is

These pumps are outperforming Tunze and Reun by appearance of the water movement. I directed them to exactly the same direction as tunzes and they blew up detritus into the water column. I didn't think I had detritus...And the pumps start in the right direction most of the time. Worlds most awesome 5 minute mod!

Soooo, a little more details on the Tunze model. I mean, that does make a difference. Are they 6000, 6100, or 6200s? Or are they the non-controllable models like the Tunze 6080?

Peace,

Thanks smjtkj...

That's pretty interesting. Do you have the 6100 on full blast?

Also, wouldn't the 1435 work better than those larger props you guys are using? I mean, the magnets and impeller rotor is much smaller than the MJ1200s so it's going to be pushing it to turn such a large prop such as the 1440...

Looks like smjtkj is having great results with a mid sized prop.

Peace,
John H.

The Octura 2035 (orange) is actually a very aggressively pitched propeller and you would be hard pressed to get that to spin on the MJ1200 let alone the Koralia.

Try the Octura 1435 (brown)

The 2035 is aggressively pitched, but small - it's about the same as a 1440 flow wise. I had the koralia 4 working great with a 1440 using a MJ 1200 magnet.

The magnet these come with is puny and likely won't push much more of a prop than stock.

Naso - try trimming your 2035 down slowly with scissors until it works. The balance of the prop doesn't really matter (contrary to opinion) since it it spinning so fast, just try to get it as even as possible by eye.

This thing would drive a 1435 no problem, it drives a slightly trimmed down 1440 no problem (the 1440 was trimmed to get it to work on a MJ 1200, not trimmed down for the koralia).

I'd love to see someone try a big dumas.

Has anyone tried this mod with a smaller koralia? I'm curious how many extra gph can be gotten out of the smaller units. I have a magnet for a mj900 and wonder what could be done with it using a 1, 2, or 3.

I'd try an octura 1435 with a mj 900 magnet in the k2/3 (same thing, different impeller I think).

kroe - So how you liking the K4 modded thus far? I've been debating about buying the K4 and modding it vs modded an old MJ1200 that I have collecting dust. I'm looking for something with more juice than the Seio1100s that I'm currently running.

You can try to find the Octura props in hobby shops or contact the company directly and order them via mail order (they do not have a website nor email)

funrcboats.com do carry some as well but they're a bit more expensive there.
There's also mjmods.com too

Modding the k4 was just an experiment for me, so I don't have any long term experience with it.

The k4 will look slicker than the mj and has a nice magnet mount, while the MJ has more potential.

Hey fellas, anyone else determine the biggest prop you can use on the K4?? I am really flopping back and forth on which I want to go with... Modded MJ1200 or Modded K4??? The K4 is definitely bigger, but looks a bit more finished, has a magnet, and is directional.. Are you guys still thinking the MJ1200 mod can push more water? I thought the best the MJ1200 could do was 2400gph or so? If what Kroe is saying is true, then isnt the K4 doing just as good?

I'll be trying the mod on the K4 in a couple of weeks. I just ordered mine and it's supposed to arrive next week.

I assure you that what I am saying is true, but... I used a MJ 1200 magnet to push the big prop.

I don't think the stock K4 magnet would have a chance at pushing anywhere near as big a prop as a MJ 1200. The stock magnet is puny - seems weaker than a MJ 400 magnet.

The one thing I didn't worry about with my experimental mod that you would have to with a permanent one is a stop for when the prop spins in reverse. Should be easy enough to construct, but unless you feel like tinkering with something new you are better off with the tried and true MJ 1200.

If you want to make a MJ mod with some of the koralia goodness try to hunt down a koralia magnet mount (I bet hydor will sell you one). It's not hard to adapt to the MJ 1200 and is much slicker looking, lower profile, and more adjustable than a sure grip magnet.

Korillia 4 modded definitely does more than a 1200 modded.

This is just really, really hard to guage since they put out entirely different flow patterns. Your standard MJ 1200 mod will put out a lot tighter stream.

The Koralia will put out a much wider stream. I think the koralia has the biggest advantage because it has almost no resistance on its performance. It has a huge grate around the prop and the the exit orifice is huge (if you also include the additional grates that I feel that flow also comes out from)! Therefore, I feel resistance to flow both on intake and exit are much lower on the koralias, which means more efficiency.

With that being said... the koralia 4 impeller is quite small compared to the MJ1200's. If the MJ1200s were designed like the koralias, then I'd say the MJ1200 mods would have more flow, but since they aren't, it's tough to say one way or another. Plus, mods are totally dependent on the end user, so that throws in another variable to consider.

Cheers,
John H.

That's not entirely true rufio173.

The MJ mod stream flow pattern depends much on how large the output on the shroud is and how long the shroud is. I used a 1.5" PVC slip coupler for my shroud and it has an ID of about 2 inches. The flow coming out of this MJ mod is very wide and dispursed with a definite cone shaped pattern.
