Why would it be a waste of time? I would love to build one. I would be willing to bet everybody else would too.

thanks for that link... it would be nice if more people get in on diy'ing these because a lot of people want them but they are just too darn expensive. I have experience with rc cars/heli brushless motors and speed controllers... and neodymium magnets are easy to source, its just a matter of getting a good design down. It would be nice to see someone take apart a vortech and see how its designed.

Was it just me, or did that guy make it almost completely made out of metal, can those parts be substituted with plastic?

Also, how did he keep the bolt in place?

I am seriously thinking about doing this.

useing the metal is just to see if was doable. i read all the post on nano-reef and he is starting to make it out of pvc and is working his way up to ceramic bearings and stuff so there will be no metal on the inside of the tank.

I have taken apart a Vortech and although there is some sensor circuitry, it is fairly simple in design.

Good neoprene padding and a better test tank would remove most of the noise. The big deal to me would be to build these usable on 1"+ thick tanks. Where's Giovanni when you need him??

Good question Stu...there were NO markings on the one I pulled apart. I am sure someone with EE experience could tell you. Maybe Giovanni knows?
