neptune serial cable

ok so i just got the aquacontroller jr w/serial port and am having a few questions. I cant seem to find any good answers for them

1. how do you guys wire up the external indicator switchs? they are in the serial port minidin-8 plug. how the heck do you wire em up? and how is your program go with the two wires?

2. do you have to use the ground isolated serial connector? if you wanna just plug it up to your computer and leave it alone is it necassary or just one of those expensive add-ons. And if you have to use it is there a cheaper version anywhere then neptunes (50 bucks) i havnt looked yet as i hope to not have to use it at all. Also if you wanna use a minidin to usb cable how or what ground fault isolater would you use?>

thanks matt
