The Iwaki100 is running the tank/sump/tank loop and it has no eductors on it. The Iwaki55 with eductors blows the Iwaki100 without away. |

actually, after i went BB, all my lifes problems were solved. It was amazing. I look and feel younger and stronger than ever. People stop me on the street, just to touch me. I have actually started the "Barebottom method of healing", which is a combination of low nutrient intake, lots of clean water, and maintaing the proper body temperature. Please look for me signing books at a Barnes and Noble near you soon..... and dont forget my online magazine...."Placing The Probe"..

I used eggcrate to creat my BB, no problems yet? Been running for 1 1/2 mo.
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...&pagenumber=11 Bomber, what are your feelings on water changes on a BB sys? Are they necessary? How much & how often do you change out? Why would you want to remove all that clean water? Anyone out there stopped doing water changes?

How are all you guys finding the corraline growth on your starboard? Mine is getting very thick, in some places 5mm-6mm thick in bubbly bits and sheets (also a few other different growth patterns).
I wonder if in years to come the growth will prove to be problematic?

Joe, I just read your thread in the SPS forum.
I was doing massive and very labor intensive water changes when I had substrate (DSB) in the tank trying to keep up with what it was leaking out. Since going BB, I'm just changing a 5gal bucket when I get around to siphoning. |

Once, when my skimmer broke, and I was out of time:
I had an egg crate grow out rack in the tank. It was the first thing to grow algea and within a few days it became an algea net. Every piece of poo was caught in the algaecrate web. Of course, it was easy enough to swap out once I was able to fix the skimmer. Last edited by adrinal; 03/27/2005 at 11:50 AM. |

That's the whole reason that I don't like shallow sand beds. Either go with a real DSB or go no sand at all. Keeping up with the maintenance on a shallow bed is a lot more than most people realize. And it doesn't give you a warning when you don't. |

No, my eggcrate was first filled with crushed coral, then a thin layer of fine sand on top. There is no way crap will get to the eggcrate, just serves as a substrate. The top layer of sand seals it off.
My reasoning for using eggcrate I thought was clear from my post? -It's freagin cheap -By using CC, not every piece of CC touches the bottom of the tank, & there are some air spaces. I was worried about the tank cracking. -The tank & board are lighter, not that much heavy. As opposed to filling entire tank bottom...lots of eggrate space. -Got rid of my CC, that would have went in the trash anyway -Seems to work, why not? I know...you need more time, sure I will be the guinea.

You can use pieces of egg crate.. small pieces, to prop up rocks. But covering the whole bottom defeats the pourpose of going w/out substrait.

In general, I've found that the cheapest route always ends up costing more in the long run when it comes to reef tanks.
Bomber, I've been tossing this idea around in my head for the last few weeks, let me know what you think about it. For my next tank, I was thinking about having the bottom made of white acrylic, and then adding a very very thin layer of sand. Once the flow kicks in, the sand would probably get piled up around the rocks, leaving me with a tank that is essentially bare bottomed, but without the look of having such a flat, unnatural looking bottom. Could this work, or would it still end up trapping too much detritus around the rocks?

Very funny! That can be our logo.
Ok, so what are you guys saying to me? I just setup a nitrate factory BB? By looking at what I did, there is NO WAY stuff will get in, the top layer is a very fine sand & thick mixture, although thin layer probably 3-4/16". I just instructed another guy to do the same thing as I did, he feels confident as well. This setup is the way to go! Looks so natural & cheaper! I can give you guys closer pics if need be?
