Hey Justin,
I was actually in PR 2 yrs specifically for the coral spawn. I was working for Alina Szmant and we worked side by side with Secore. I visited mitch last march and saw his progeny. Although he is growing some out, he infected the larvae with zoox from pacific acro yongei so his are not exactly kosher palmata. I didnt go last year but there is a chance that I will be back there again this coming summer with another researcher.

Yes, I remember you Jake. Alina wasn't there this year. Someone said she had something set up in the eastern Caribbean maybe Mexico? Nothing was missed this year. Looks like 2007 was an off year for the palmata, with only a very few colonies spawing early in the month in Rincon (as you probably know). I was in Key Largo for the second half of the spawn. Only two colonies spawned and not enough for any good collections.
When we put Mitches' palmata in our tanks some turned to a nice brown color like the wild strain. These brown ones are by far doing the best. The ones that remained greenish haven't grown and some have died. Are you going to the coral reef symposium in Lauderdale this summer? (Living in Florida is Great!) Justin |

Hey Mitch,
Thanks for chiming in. Are you keeping the two batches together in the same system? The survivorship discrepancy is pretty remarkable, do you think it is due just to the different zoox strain or are there any other factors that may be contributing? What about growth? is the first green batch branching out yet and do you see any improved growth with the new zoox strain?

Hey Mark,
Considering you are the reefer who got me into Palmata eons ago it's about time you found this thread. Thanks for the comments, glad you like it.

It might have something to do w/ the correct strain used and it might have something to do w/ having a year of experience and knowing a bit more what to do and what not to do. The first batch isn't green anymore and look just like palmata now. I increased their light quite a bit and they all lost the green pigment. Most are now 2-3 inches in diameter and are starting to branch. Growth rates of the new batch are similar to the last batch. Mitch |

Mitch,
Did you ever talk to the researcher from U. Miami who was doing a paper on the effects of living in an aquarium on zoox clades. He was looking to see if they were changing from wild populations when moved into captivity. We talked about your palmata, and I don't remember if he met up with you yet. I'm not at work so I don't have his name. Glad to hear your second batch is doing even better! Nice article, Jake. Justin |

Hey Justin I think the guy who was researching the zoox was Robin Smith, I sent him some samples.
