That is what I did on a smaller scale- 400 lbs of dry rock in a 200 gallon vat mixed with 300 lbs of live rock. Let it cure with a skimmer and VHO's for 8 weeks. Definitely smells terrible and should be done somewhere where the temperature can be controlled.

What I wanted to do originally was build the aquascape in the tank without the water in it so if I cycle it for few weeks in some appropriate container and then build the aquascape with 'moist' rock and then finish the cycle in the big tank. How long do you think the rock can be out of water before it needs massive cycling again ?
I would try to connect both our skimmers to the cycle container/s. I wouldn't think lights were important in the cycle since I'm just ridding the die offs. I usually buy the rock already cycled so I'm not used to cycling liverock but I've observed the process in few LFS's |

If it were mine I think I would
Cycle the dryrock in a seprate container(s) with (preferably) a skimmer and a few pieces of live rock if possible. No light necessary. Actually light will just fuel algae at this point. Until the smell is gone.......... Have your water ready to fill the main tank. Then build your aquascape as you planned before (without the smell). Keeping a few spray bottles around filled with saltwater to keep the rocks moist as you are building. The rocks will be fine for many hours as long as they are kept moist...... Then just fill the tank and test for ammonia, nitrite nitrate for the next couple of weeks as normal to see if you go through another mini cycle. I would actually let more die off occur and the rocks to shed and siphon off the detritus before adding the substrate (if you are adding substrate). Good luck |

doing it in freshwater is an absolute waste of time. The whole point of curing/cycling rock is to let the beneficial SALTWATER bacteria colonize all of the rock. If you did it in freshwater, you'd still have to cycle it all over again in saltwater with prob a larger amount of die off of all of the freshwater bacteria.

Things are going painfully slow these days. I'm waiting for the contractor to saw a little bit more, level the stand and put in some cement.
I have got my liverock however and I am really pleased. I thought I might not have bought enough but seeing the rocks on the stand I see that it will do very fine. I also have other ~700 pounds stored elsewhere which will be a very good base for these beauties     ... full size images here |

I would like to see the plans for the equipment that's going to be hooked up on this system? how big will the sump be? Are you gonna use 8 1000 watt MH's or is it all going to be T5 fluorescent lighting?
at this size you would probably be using 2500 kilo's of live rock? Man i can't wait to see this baby filled!! |

 ? rocks look great also have you decided on how you will cook them?
